This early Sharon McCone book lacks nothing in character development, plot or sub-plot twists. As a stand alone mystery, this book is successful in making you feel like you knew the neighborhood and the characters.

If you, like me, are someone who has read the series in its entirety just don't let what you know from later books get you confused. Just stay with the story and the time line - it is well worth it.

Sharon is asked by Willie to find someone who is stalking him. Willie fences stolen goods, as do some of the other vendors in the flea market. Some Torah scrolls were stolen in the flea market. As Sharon attempts to help Willie, she finds herself in danger from what appears to be a para-military group. Another in the early part of the series. Although not as well written as later books in the series, I consider the early ones the best.

This is the seventh in the Sharon McCone series, so it is set in the early 1980’s, soon after the end of the Vietnam war, and at a time when churches ..Show More »were working together to re-settle South Vietnamese into the United States, with a large population being settled in California. The Globe, an apartment building once home to wealthier people in San Francisco, is now mostly a building frequented by very poor people, until a Refugee committee rented most of the apartments in the building for Vietnamese families. The Vietnamese people cleaned up the building, but it is still in the Tenderloin District and the owner wants to sell the building but can’t because of rent control. Sharon McCone is called in because the Refugee Assistance Committee believes that there are people in the underworld of the Tenderloin who want to scare the Vietnamese families into leaving. Then, soon after she starts investigating, a teenage Vietnamese boy whose family resides in the building, is murdered. Then his best friend, who lives in the building, disappears, and the Pornography king who owns the old theater next door is found dead. The police want Sharon to stay away from the case, but of course she stays in the middle and solves the mystery. This is probably one of the last books to be about Sharon’s worksite, the All-Souls Legal Cooperative, as things are falling apart there, but this book still has most of the well-known characters involved.

This was like listening to an episode of "Murder She Wrote". The reader even sounded like Angela Landsbury. There were about 200 characters and none..Show More » of them were very memorable. And I need to check the publication date because the characters were talking about getting a car phone in addition to their "Cellular Phone". Just and out of date and out of touch snooze fest.

If you like Marcia Muller you will like this book. I have read only a few of her books and I don't remember liking those as much as I liked this one..Show More ». Sharon McCone, the story's main P.I., is an enjoyable character. She is tough and smart, but very human, as well. There is quite a lot of her personal life in the book, but that didn't bother me or digress too much from the mystery.
I loved the mystery of what happened to the missing woman all those years ago. It kept me listening on and on, well past my bedtime.
If you don't know Marcia Muller's work, I think this would be a good introduction into the series. Just don't worry too much about all the family and friends you are introduced to in the beginning and you'll do fine.

I can't imagine what I would have done if Audible had been around in those days with excellent readers like Deanna Hurst. I probably would not have eaten or slept. I would not have gone to school. I would have been absorbed into books, non-stop. They would have had to send me to a book detox center. Well, years later there is no more Nancy Drew or Beverly Grey but now there's Marcia Muller and her alter ego Sharon McCone. Not only have I read the entire series up to and including Locked In and Coming Back, I am sitting here waiting for Ms. Muller to write her next book and hoping it will be soon because I am having definite withdrawal symptoms. Her well balanced characters, her courage to allow Sharon to hire people who have, in traditional literature, been shunned or stereotyped and her excellent, complicated plots that take twists and turns without becoming either boring or illogical is what keeps me listening. The only complaint - hey, I want the books to be longer. Well, you can't have everything. Read it, you'll love it.

Not the best Sharon McCone mystery, but still an enjoyable story. Not sure why certain elements were introduced, like "Jake" being involved in illegal..Show More » arms dealing, if it apparantly had little or nothing to do with the plot and then was just left hanging at the end, but no big deal. Another worthwhile listen from Ms. Muller.

But the one thing that drove me crazy, is the one that most frequently drives me crazy about narrators. Ridiculously mis-pronounced words. It would seem that anyone hired to narrate a recorded book would first read the book, perhaps highlight the words they don't know, and then look them up. Or listen to previous narrators who got them correct. Or most basically, ask the author who certainly knows them very well. Some are local dialect, in which case the reader might ask someone who lives there. Some are less commonly known words in general. But if the author has chosen to include them in the story, the reader should prepare and get them right. Small stuff maybe, but it's jarring to the ear, and diminishes the enjoyment of the book. I've spent many wonderful days in the wine country. Someone please look up how to say Lytton Springs. I'm also a pilot. McCone long flew and loved a delightful aerobatic plane. It's called a Citabria (basically aerobatic spelled backwards). Not a common name outside aviation circles, but...really not that hard! Ms. Hicks absolutely butchered it. Please Laura, if you ever read another McCone novel, prepare better!
