I was hovering between 3-4 stars on this one, then realized i was looking forward to getting the next book enough for it to be a 4 star.
The na..Show More »rration started off a bit iffy, but quickly improved. The "vampire" angle has been approached with an original take, and I enjoyed that. Its becoming hard to find good "Gothic" Sci-fi/fantasy lately without wading through masses of poorly written erotic chic-lit with the cover a cross between Fabio and Boris karloff.
This is as advertised. A Military/vampire hunter theme, centered around a single likable character, written almost in a Horatio Hornblower fashion. All good things in my opinion.
Post Apocalyptic, vampires, traitors, corrupt politicians, guns and battles there is something for everyone if you don't mind your fantasy novels pushing the bounds of credulity (Oddly enough, some people want more realism in their fantasy novels.)
I enjoyed it, and i especially enjoy the fact that its 7 books, aka no waiting on the next one.
David Valentine is a Cat- a spy and covert ops agent fighting the aliens who have all but conquered Earth and made it their feeding grounds. Under a ..Show More »fake identity, he's infiltrated an enemy gunship as an officer, and done things that burn his conscience to gain the position of trust he needs for his mission to retrieve a weapon he knows nothing about. When his backup doesn't arrive as planned, he has to improvise, and winds up working with pirates and rebel forces with agendas of their own. To get their cooperation, David must help defeat their oppressor.
When he gets to his destination, he finds a stranger ally still: a Kurian turncoat who his Lifeweaver kin have dubbed 'The Once-ler', and who had a history with David's father. Taking their new weapon out for a little field test, they wind up sparking a full-scale rebellion. And the trip back is no picnic either, with betrayals and naval battles and armies of sentient rats.
I stumbled onto the Valentine series a while ago and have faithfully followed it from the first book through to this one (Valentine's Rising).
S..Show More »ome have complained that the series is a bit rough. That may be true - but the characters are engaging and the world very interesting (if dark).
If you are a fan of post-apocalyptic worlds and science fiction you are likely to enjoy this series. The Valentine series also has a very epic span. Personally I found it immersive and very enjoyable.
Are you a Wolf, Cat, Bear or a Quisling? Listen to the books and I'm sure you'll form an opinion!
I found the overall story to be quite entertaining, but the writing was a bit cumbersome and juvenile in some places. This writer has the potential to..Show More » be a great writer one day, unfortunately for us today is not that day. I am looking forward to seeing his future work and hoping that he comes up with better ways to indicate the characters he is talking about. I got rather tired of hearing the reader say Valentine this and Valentine that.
I rate this book better than average in this series. and have read the bad reviews that are posted about book #9. its bunk....... this is very E Z to ..Show More »follow and covers all the needed info. do not allow these reviews
to keep you from reading or listening to this book..... this series is the best i have read and i will eagerly wait to buy the next book.
