Excellent police procedural set in Cambridge, UK featuring 25-year old DC Gary Goodhew, a new detective, who is viewed with mistrust and envy due to h..Show More »is quick rise to the DC role.
The book follows the stories of suspects, victims and police, showing the varying point of views (POVs) as we seek to unravel this complex mystery.
DC Gary Goodhew is a bit of a maverick at the station, following his own methodologies and uncanny hunches, much to the chagrin of his boss, DI Marks who is determined to make Goodhew a team player or let him go.
I loved the writing, especially how well all of the characters were fleshed out and the intricate relationships between the families and the co-workers.
Jonathan Broadbent did an excellent job with the narration, although his pacing can be a bit "off-putting" at first.
I do quite enjoy the DC Goodhew books but I get annoyed by the narrator - he's young like Goodhew so I suppose that fits but a couple of things irrita..Show More »te - he doesnt do characters as well as some other narrators and has a tendency to be a bit flat. My other bigger irritation is the mispronunciation of local names - Quy is not Key, it rhymes with Why! And Gwydir St also rhymes with Why - it isn't Gwidder St. Apart from that and the slightly improbable treatment of Goodhew by his superior the series is nice because they're set in my home town.
Ive stuck with this series because I enjoy books set in my home town but this will probably be my last. The gratuitous sex descriptions just dont cut..Show More » it for me and there seems to be a sexual element running through all this series so far and if the next in the series is of similar ilk I just wont be bothered. Narration continues to irritate - there were a few attempts at character definition but not nearly enough in comparison with other narrators who can really lead you into a scene peopled with lots of individuals. Im sure he does his best but this young chap (I am assuming) just seems to be reading the book. At least there were no glaring mispronounciations of local place names this time which is a plus.
