I found this story well-written, with a fresh, novel voice for this genre. Not all the dialogue and characters are "what you might expect". (Example..Show More »s: I really enjoyed the way Clara's inner life, her thoughts and sense of humor are written, and the love-story aspect of it is not drowned in cliche'). The characters become very real because they are warm-hearted, engaging and compelling. The heroine and other main characters are quite believable. To me the narration was pretty much perfectly suited to Clara and the other characters throughout. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what makes the difference between a story that does draw you in and feels truly heartfelt and one that does not, but this story definitely has it, and I highly recommend it. My only minor complaint is that, after a lot of anticipation, I found the very end just a bit lackluster. Evidently, that was how the author felt she wanted to segue to a sequel at the time, but after the two most dramatic scenes toward the end, I felt it lacked the punch it could have had. Having said that, the characters have won me over and I will definitely be on board for the next installment!
This is a fantastic book, a truly worthy follow-up to "Unearthly." My only problem with it is that I would have liked MORE, and I guess I've got to wa..Show More »it until January 2013 to get my fix! I bought this the day it was published in print, and then waited very impatiently for the audiobook. The re-read via audio was very satisfying, and I thought the narrator did a fine job.
But ... mostly I'm just greedy. :-) Cynthia Hand draws me in so completely, fills this story with so much meaty material, that I just want to sit and feast until I can't hold another word.
This is an absolutely wonderful, incredibly compelling story that will take over your heart and thoughts for days. I am a huge fan of this series, and will be rattling around Ms. Hand's website for the next year dying for glimpses of the next installment!
I think these books had great potential. There is interesting world building and a few characters I really wanted to hear more from. Unfortunately, wh..Show More »en the book was over all I could really remember is the love triangle from hell. Why? Why must there always be a stupid love triangle? It takes over and everything else is colored by it.
Other then the love triangle that wouldn't die these books are middle-grade. Not change your life fantastic but good enough. Plenty of fluff, adventure, and tension to keep you interested.
If you like angel stories its one of the better ones!
