There is a rhythm and a beat to a well written, first person, story. Lisa Shearin feels it, Raine Benars has it. Unfortunately for the listener, Eilee..Show More »n Stevens has neither; at least not in this first installment of the series.
This is a happening story. It's fun, fast, believable, and full of magical mayhem of the highest caliber. Raine Benars, elf, is a street kid at heart. She has high standards, but they may not always reflect those of her society. She finds things for a living. Some of the things she finds may or may not be considered legally lost...
In this story she starts out with the best of intentions and, through a series of events which are completely beyond her control, ends up the center of attention in a wild magical quest which drags her through the lowest of the low to the highest levels her society can offer - and she manages to fit in perfectly at every turn. If you are ready for fun, this is the perfect series for it.
This story rates 4 stars. Unfortunately, the narration doesn't.
Ok.. In all fairness the narrative improves with practice. The flow is better and the characterizations are better executed. I suppose the lady just n..Show More »eeded a little practice with the style of writing. This book was done better than the last and convinced me to go ahead and purchase the last two books.. The narrative improves enough in the second half of the first book to give hope for the second and it improves enough through the second book to warrant giving the third the benefit of the doubt. The story is good enough that it is worth putting up with the few short comings of the reading that are left once the narrator has gotten the rythme of the reading down a little more smoothly. And let's face it guys, no one is perfect!
I can not remember when I last listened to a book this fast. I found my self finding excuses to sit down and listen to more. It is not a serious story..Show More » at all but it is Great fun and full of action.
I must retract what I have said about this narrator. The more of this story she reads, the better she gets at it. Eileen Stevens has earned my respect..Show More » as a narrator and story teller. She got used to the writing style and the story .. characters, etc.. She has done a wonderful job, and deserves praise for this series. I am glad they continued to use her for these books.. It's nice to have some consistency, but only when the narrator can adapt to the story, and Eileen Stevens has done a beautiful job of that. I will be listening to this story for a long time to come.
