Humanity finally have FTL and we were contacted by conglomerate of alien races (League of Peoples), who told us the rules of living in this universe.<..Show More »br/>The most important one is " SHALT NOT KILL" if you are a murderer you are not sentient, and there are many more interesting things to know on this topic, but I leave it up to you to read them.
The second most curious thing about the future is the EXPLORER CORE. Being explorer is a very dangerous job, and mortality rate is very high (oh s**t!), and when someone popular on the ship dies during exploratory mission it disrupts people's morale for a long while. So it was decided to use someone who won't be liked by anyone, won't be popular on the ship, people with birth defects, outcasts, expendable material.
PS the plot was very interesting, but I have a feeling that the first book was just laying basis for the future storyline. .
It's been 2 years since the events of the previous book.
The book has a very slow beginning about 1/4 of it is just informational story line..Show More » about new acting scene, it was so boring that I almost dropped it, but gradually it picked up the pace, and yet it was completely different from the first book.
The story is kinda science fiction conspiracy detective with completely new set of characters, and even those that are familiar to us have a completely different feel to them.
This is book 5 in The League of Peoples. For the most part, all the books in this series are of the less than totally serious type. Oh, the protagonis..Show More »ts get into trouble, there is mayhem and characters die, but still generally fun light reading.
This book is in the voice of Oar (as she always introduces herself, an Oar is an implement used to propel boats). Oar is a charming childlike, self-centered, beautiful, transparent (literally) woman who we met in book 1. She was not in books 2, 3, or 4.
Don't look for hard science in this series. It isn't like that. Read or listen to these when you want something light and entertaining.
There are quite a few humor gems. For example, top military council is made up of corrupt and incompetent people. One of the characters seriously complains that just a few hundred years ago, such people would never be put in charge of anything. :)
