This is fun story. The characters are not flat, though only limited development over the book. It modern with reference's to mp3 players, laptops and ..Show More »cell phone but doesn't let that get in the way of the magic of the children. Grand-mama X and her cats are in some ways better characters then the main twins Jack and Jade. While the story isn't transparent it's could have been much more original.
If you or your kids have issues with (not graphic) descriptions of ants, bugs, rats and white eyes this would be one to pass. Evil is much more clear then in Keys to the Kingdom.
While I'm sure I'll enjoy the next book. I hope that Garth decides to go back to writing solo.
I must admit to having generally mixed feelings about this series. I really like Garth Nix work - Aborhorson &, Keys to the Kingdom but this is weaker..Show More ». The character in the Troubletwisters have always been more flat and ideas less interesting. Ok so I really liked the cats - who saddly are almost bit parts in this book.
The story starts out promising - the twins are finally going to advance in there training - a mysteries message for help from someone Grammy X knows but then the story flags. All is relived about Grammy X yet it presented in such a way that no suspense is allowed to build up.
Personally I would say there is wiggly room for more books - maybe they just wanted to a sequel series rather then try to keep Jake and Jade.
If your adult for your own pleasure it's about 3.5 - for kids (middle school crowd) it's likely better but not by much.
In this book Jack and Jade finally seem to be real characters and more teens then in the previous books. Saddly the solution to the mystery is pretty ..Show More »clear if you read book one. The biggest change in this book is that Jack and Jade start to try to clearly by themselves decide things. They are less children and more teens in this book. Jack and Jade meet people who aren't Evil and aren't pre-vented by Grama-X; they make good and bad choices and not all the choices are made for reasonable reasons. The only thing I could have wish was that the cat's Arty and Cleo had a bigger role. I really rather liked them . Yes finally Garth Nix seems to pulled the characters together into something much much better.
