The narrator helps me choose the book. Anne Flosnik is an excellent narrator. I was not disappointed with her performance with this book at all. The a..Show More »uthor was trying to portray an independent woman who could hold her own as a fighter. Unfortunately she did not give this heroin a brain. I have a problem with stupid acting, self serving female characters in books who put many people in jeopardy because of their childish acts. If you want to portray an independent woman, then also give her a brain. Plus the second half of the book made it feel disconnected from the first half. I only gave 3 stars.
This is book 2 but could be a stand alone book, this is not one of my favourite CC books, it was a bit too unbelievable. If you like Coulter's books ..Show More »then I am sure you will like this listen which was an enjoyable listen, but frustrating in places and was either too sweet or too sour.
Worth a credit? Mmmm debatable, I wouldn't call it a wasted credit but there are better out there.
Probably not. I do not care for Anne Flosnik as a narrator. Her nasal voice is about as appealing as fingernails on chalkboard. I was also annoyed at ..Show More »her mispronounced Latin when she was playing a character that was supposedly an expert in the language. There was a lot lacking in the actual storyline also. So, it made it very difficult to finish the book. I skipped hole chapters and don't feel like I missed anything since the action moved so slowly. I finished the book and had no lingering thoughts or emotion like I typically do after finishing a good book. Instead I felt I had just wasted time.
I have read some of the other reviews and I can't seem to understand why everyone is getting their panties in a bunch! Like some of the other reviewer..Show More »s wrote, look at the timeline to which the book is coming from. It was a very different lifestyle to where we are today. In that life, us females were not given a choice on husbands, they were chosen and demanded that we had to marry that person. Don't do it and you are either chastised, beaten or disowned by your family. Anyhow, I actually had a great time listening to this book as with all the other Song Series and Catherine is one of my favorite authors. I can't wait for another and hope that she have some other lost soul (men) that needs a strong woman to stand by him and put him in his place.
Being a historical novel reader, my standards are often hard to please. I want more than the tight arms embracing the heroin. I need some story line t..Show More »o be there as well. Catherine Coulter's (CCS) books have that: story line with romance and mystery/fantasy. I have chosen several of her books as they are an easy read/listen while multi-tasking: don't require a lot of brain power; have a smacking of sexual tension; and almost always leave me contented after the read.
Story line: suffice it to say that there is a curse. Aha the title! This curse has been placed upon a castle and the female family line, that appears to -kill off- any suitors, or husbands. The plot builds on ending the curse for one such suitor. There is the continued repeating of the CURSE and legend. GOT IT! At times I felt a strain between the seams of reality and fantasy. Not enough, though, to stop me from reading and enjoying the book. Someone else wrote that they found it boring. That person probably didn't finish the novel and/or like fantasy.
CC is NOT Jane Austen or George Eliot. Her books don't deal with realistic interactions of the time period; rather deals with love, courtship, and historical romance and fantasy uniquely interwoven. IF this doesn't fit your style, than most likely you will not like her novels.
However, if you would like to be entertained, without a lot of War and Peace drama, then this novel fits the bill. If you need the Darcy and Elizabeth dialogue - then don't purchase this audio book. Think of it this way: There is Jack and the Beanstalk or Alice in Wonderland; not everyone would enjoy the differing styles and would prefer ONE over the other.
I???ve read every historical romance written by Catherine Coulter and enjoyed them all. BUT, this is the worst book I???ve purchased in a long time. ..Show More » The characters were flat, boring and undeveloped. The story was disjointed and had no flow throughout the book. I was seriously disappointed and could not believe a veteran writer would but out something so poorly written.
