I'm no expert on accents, but i thought he provided a perfect voice for Rebus. I'll definitely download more of the series. For reference, other authors I've enjoyed recently on audio include John Sandford and Daniel Silva. (If you've read those authors too, you can tell if we have similar tastes.)

The man is a very competent narrator, but he does not seem to be the voice of Rebus, especially as the Rebus character grows more complex in the course of the series. Also, he doesn't get the tone (vocal or literary) of the the story right, to my ears. Unfortunately most of the unabridged Rebus novels on Audible are narrated by Gilles. They'd be a much better listen if James Macpherson (or almost anyone else) was narrating! I'd never read Rankin but will listen to everything Audible's got, so I'll settle for Gilles because Rankin's Rebus et. al. still makes better than average listening entertainment-- unabridged (I found the couple of abridgements I tried to hear Macpherson narrate very choppy editions).

And - becasue I listened to Rankin's Exit Music (Rebus' last) from iTunes rather than Audible due to Cdn$ difference - and I can't recommend that book on its proper page -- Can I just throw in here that Exit Music is a 5 star conclusion to this great series (and it's not Samuel Gilles, either).

I had to stop listening to this book because the reader sounded like a news anchor rather than a storyteller. Clipped and monotonous in tone.

This novel is a bit slow starting, compared to say Fleshmarket Alley, but is a good, solid representation of Rebus. The characters are well defined an..Show More »d nicely flawed and the reader does a decent job at separating the various voices. This book meanders a bit during the story going off on seemingly random tangents, but I enjoy how the characters deal with the underbelly of Edinburgh enough to see it through. If you are needing a solid Rebus fix after hitting the more drama/story driven books, this will do it.

If you like Rebus, you'll like this book. As the first Rebus book I've heard, it took me a while to get into the story, but was well worth the patienc..Show More »e. The characters are nicely flawed and interesting and the story is quite enthralling as well.

The narrator was solid with the accents, but some of the different voices I found a bit irritating, thankfully these were just sideline characters.

The last few hours I couldn't stop listening, quite suspenseful, although the impetus for the murders I found a bit stretched. Try Naming of the Dead as well.

Resurrection Men is one of the best of the Inspector Rebus stories. More convoluted than some of the others, it does require close attention, preferab..Show More »ly not while driving. The narrator does an excellent job of differentiating the large cast of characters and can actually pronounce Irn Bru correctly. However, Scots may be annoyed by a tendency for Scottish characters to break into English vowels occasionally and Rebus sounds far too Edinburgh genteel if you have always thought of him as using the broad Scots of author Ian Rankin. Terrific value.

Ian Rankin weaves a good plot that keeps you entertained throughout. A good listen.

Any avid Rankin reader must wonder what would happen in a universe where Rebus and Fox coexist. Rankin manages what most writers attempting similar cr..Show More »oss-overs don't do well: he permits them to meet in a credible way. However intriguing that is, it's a minor part of the story. They cross paths in a typical Rebus case.

I had missed the announcement that a new Rebus was in press, so this appearance on Audible delighted me and set up great expectations, especially after the classic Exit Music. While Standing…Grave is a welcome, credible and solid return for Rebus, the novel doesn't rank as one the best on the series. But Rebus is back, still ageing in real time and dealing with his demons. And it sounds like he's here to stay for further detection of crime and complacency. If this is a first Rebus novel for you, start with an earlier one to better appreciate ongoing elements like debate on Scottish nationalism and complicated relationships with Siobhan Clarke, Big Ger Cafferty, authority figures and mortality.

Happily, happily, "in this geographical region", this time we get narrator James Mcpherson for an unabridged Rebus. If your ear isn't used to a Scottish burr, take some time to adjust because he seems to me the perfect voice for Rebus - not an intellectual detective, but a clever, wiley, gritty, witty one.

Rebus is not the kind of protagonist I usually like, but Rankin creates him and his Edinburgh with some kind of addictive writer's magic. McCall Smith does Dr Jekyll; Rankin, Mr Hyde (on the road to redemption).
