I started this book with some concern that it wouldn't live up to my high hopes. I was very happy to find that it grabbed my attention right away. T..Show More »he description of the battle that led to the ship entering the storm captivated me right away. The author kept up with detail but also came up with an interesting approach to a parallel Earth. I very much enjoyed how the crew of the Walker deal with a local threat and the need to find resources that don't exist yet. The author did a great job of keeping the story interesting and on target. I look forward to the next book in this series!
At first I passed over this book series, because the plot did not catch my interest: Old Destroyer even by WWII standards, Alternate world, primitive ..Show More »people/monkeys ----- BUT I was wrong! This book and its narrator turned out to be very exciting and a page turner in a audible way. Obviously, I enjoyed both books so far in this series, but I thought this one was better than the first. Maybe it's just because characters grow on you. Looking forward to the next book!
I was somewhat undecided whether to continue listening to the series because of a series of reviews stating that in Malestrom, the story of the destro..Show More »yermen had become boring and uninteresting. I did not find this to be the case. I remained fully engaged by the story which continued to unfold in interesting ways. The characters in the story continued to develop which to added depth to the alternate world in which the story takes place. I enjoyed this book just as much as I enjoyed the first two and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the first two books in this series.
If you have enjoyed the other books in the Destroyermen series, you will certainly enjoy this one. We reconnect with the crew of USS Walker and her al..Show More »lies 3 months after the devastating, yet victorious, battle with the Grik. Everyone has been very industrious since that battle and the first two-thirds of the book is effectively a tour of all the industrious things different groups have been doing.
The final third of the book finally brings some serious conflicts and setbacks (and battles!) that have made the series so enjoyable. The Grik are in the background for most of this story, though there is no doubt they will rise to menace our heroes again.
Overall I did enjoy the book, but it mostly felt like a bridge between the prior three books and future books. That was OK with me because I enjoy the characters and the "lost world" aspect of their surroundings. I do expect the next one to have a lot more action as all the allies' industrious activities on the home front get put into high gear.
The narrator generally does a fabulous job with the voices - certainly not easy with multiple human and non-human characters. Though I though his vocalization of "Larry the lizard" left a bit to be desired - though that certainly didn't take away from a thoroughly enjoyable time.
If you have not started this series yet, I envy you. If you have started this series, than you are likely in the same boat as myself...in agony, knowi..Show More »ng there will be such a long wait for book 6. I wish there was a device that could erase specific parts of my memory so that I could go back and listen the these books again for the first time.
I enjoyed this book even more than the first 4 even though there was much less action. It's obvious Mr. Anderson is setting up the sequence for future events, and I usually hate that, but he did such a great job, I'm afraid the actual events are going to be anti-climactic. I'm sure my fear is unwarranted.
As always, a superior performance by the narrator. I absolutely forget that all those characters are coming from just one person. Well done Mr. Dufris!
It has been my experience that some series suffer from drag. This book is even more high paced that the earlier ones. The books keep getting better ..Show More »and better, more story lines, unexpected twist, triumphs mixed with defeats. Taylor does an excellent job of blending a wonderful concept with the lives and experiences of his characters. What a purely exciting story. Has me longing for the next one already.
Great book. It advanced the story and had some great action scenes. As always, William Dufris did a great job with all of the voices.
My only..Show More » issue with the book is that the story has grown so much and there are so many different things going on that it felt a little abridged to me. By the time I was fully invested in one of the side stories, it would jump to another location. Hopefully he will bring some of the characters back together or start writing much longer books!
