However, this story, & I suspect all subsequent sequels, contains adult content that I would not necessarily recommend for the younger teenage reader/listener. Johanna Parker brings the story alive & is by far my favourite narrator so far.

The characters are beguiling and mysterious and you soon learn about them in a most intimate manner.
There is lots of romance along with plenty of suspense. You would think those two would not match as well as they did. But not only does this book keep you on the edge of your seat, but it keeps you giggling like a young girl as she watches a love story unfold in front of her eyes.
This was an excellent listen and I would suggest anybody to give it a go.

There are some series that I start and cannot wait to get to the next book and this is not really one of them for me. They are good books but not great in my opinion. They are the books I buy when I am stuck on something to listen too but do not have anything lined up. I find that when I am listening to them I don’t want to stop I want to keep listening but when the book is over I can listen to a few other books before going on to the next book in this series. I do like that Sookie can pretty much take care of herself and is not a weak figure, she knows who she is and what she wants and that is refreshing to see. I will probably get them all and am excited about the next two (books 3 and 4) because they have gotten really good reviews. I suggest this book to adult readers who want something a little funny with a down to earth main character. I enjoyed the narrator and think that she gives the perfect voice to Sookie.

Since another fo..Show More »ur novels continue the series after this one, I can't write @ the plot, but many of the twists in the next four,(& the 9th book due out this spring), depend on this sexy and exciting episode. So for SVM fans it's not to be missed.

For new fans of the Sookie Stackhouse novels who watch True Blood on HBO, you'll find the books different from the series. They are lighter & more humorous. The plots are better, the dialogue not as self-conscious & Bill is NOT the hero.

The narrator of this entire series is Johanna Parker. She is first rate at giving distinct personalities to each character. She deserves a prize. I hope that she's back to read #9.

I love the Southern Vampire books! C. Harris has created a fascinating universe in which the vampires have come out of the coffin, but the shapeshift..Show More »ers, fairies and others definitely have not! This is the 4th in the series and can be read without reading the other books. however, it's much more enjoyable to read the others first, so that the interactions between the major and minor characters are clear.

Harris has created an intrecate polical structure for the different supernaturals ("supes")who either hate, ignore or tolerate the other supes with the vampires being the most organized. Sookie Stackhouse, the telepathic barmaid, has been dragged into vampire politics before (and hated it) and now is about to be heavily involved in werewolf politics - the succession of the packmaster of Shreveport.

After having no love life for most of her life (the local men would rather think she's nuts rather than telepathic), Sookie's current love life is a mess. She is definitely not seeing her first boyfriend, Vampire Bill. Eric, Head vampire in the area and Bill's boss, desperately wants to know what happened when he had amnesia and stayed with Sookie (book #3). Sam, Sookie's boss, is a shapeshifter and interested (but only after she starting dating Bill). Calvin, a werepather from an isolated and very strange small town, is courting her. And Alcide, a werewolf, wants to marry her but he also wants to help his father become the next packmaster of Shreveport.

Sookie's brother Jason now turns into a werepanther during the full moon and someone is shooting the shapeshifters of BonTon.

One of the most interesting things about this universe is that the people accept that vampires exist but refuse to admit that shapeshifters, witches and magic also exist!

The recording is excellent with the reader doing a good job with the different voices. I wish that the other books were also available at Audible!

Quinn has grown on me some in this book and Sookie is getting tougher.

They are making a pilot out of this series called True Blood on HBO. It is a light and funny series with a lot of adventure that I started listening ..Show More »to in the middle with Dead as a Doornail with Audible. I did go out and get the earlier books to read to bring myself up to date. I would love to have the entire series available on Audible. Even though each book stands on its own it is better starting at the beginning, you get more of a feel on the history of the characters. If you are looking for something entertaining you will enjoy this series.

I could find onl..Show More »y #5 and #7 in my library, so decided to use the credits I so carefully hoard on Audible. Paper or player, these books were the Hagen-Das of my week. Kept going back for just one more! Didn't talk to my husband all week! Didn't even leave the house all week!
Audible, where is #4? I'm second on my library's list for #4...that could be 6 weeks! How will I last?

The Narrator is great! She IS Sookie! And everybody else.

The books are fun & sexy. Very sexy.They are full of imaginative ideas that make up a plausible world. Sookie is tough, sweet and very smart. She figures things out quickly & takes action. Her specialty is thinking outside the box that the vampires live in.

I think that this book, #8, has some more interesting plots twists than a few of the others and also has some nice cues for the future.

Big question...Eric or Bill?...or someone else?

I wa..Show More »s certainly entertained, but disappointed on several counts. Strengths: The dialogue quality is excellent in this installment. The tone of the book is darker but appropriately so given FDTW foreshadowing. Some foreshadowing in previous books realized quite nicely(e.g., fairy dangers, were reveal). Bill does more than pine. You get more Eric than in past books and I loved it that he talks a lot. And while there is a major relationship development early in the book, there wasn't anything new revealed about their depth of feeling for one another. If FDTW gave you hope for a big, squishy "talk," you'll be disappointed. There's plenty of satisfying dialogue between E and S, but well, I think after waiting out 4 books, we deserved more. I suppose my beef is with the loads of ink spent in clearing old subplots, removing secondary characters and inserting placeholders. I agree it was time to pare down the cast, I was just jealous that every page spent on that stuff was one less page devoted to Sookie's men. Still, I thank Ms. Harris and don't know what I'll do with myself waiting for the next book.

The first thing that really irked & made me wonder about Harris' knowledge of the wilderness, is when the pack wants to hunt on Sookie's land. It's 20 acres! Are you serious? I could understand 120 acres, but not 20. What were they going to do, run around in a big circle? Deer & all other large animals cover miles of land. I have 700 acres of hunting land & it still takes an effort to bring in deer. My yard alone is 2 acres, so I can easily imagine a 20 acre land plot. Why would they even consider Sookie's land, when they have all of the Louisianna wilderness? Not very imaginative on Harris' part. I know that it was recommended by someone, but still, any good pack leader would have scoffed at the idea.

Did anyone else notice all of the plugs? I understand True Blood being the only beverage mentioned, because of HBO, but do I need a Marie Callender's pot pie commercial in the middle of a book? Although, the Little Debbie honey bun commercial did peek my interest.

I just get the feeling that Harris' Sookie writing skills have been tainted by HBO's True Blood & her website's forums. I've been there, I've read all of the recommendations that her fans would like to see in her next book. On True Blood, we know that Alcede will be in the next season. So let's write him into D-I-T-F & make him mention his feelings for Sookie. Eric's maker was in this past season of True Blood...let's write him into D-I-T-F...For all of the Bill fans, let's write him into the book, & just have wasted pages because it has absolutely NO relevance to the book. Every little fan tid bit has been added.

I think Harris needs to seclude herself from her fans' and HBO's influences. It seems like this was a fanfic over an original. I could go on & on but am allowed only 2000 characters.

I give it 2 stars because it's 100% better than book 10, but still worlds away from the brilliance of the first 4 books. After book 4, it's been a slow decline downhill. The past few books, the pace has picked up & the snowball is plummeting downhill at an avalanche's speed.
Do you remember when you were a kid & you waited til the last minute to do your homework? It's the night before a big essay is due, or the morning of, & you hurry to do it, making sure you reach that word count that the teacher assigned? That's this book! No thought went into it. No imagination! It was SO predictable! Just because you're a best selling author doesn't mean that you can turn out any gibberish & it'll be brilliant.
My title sums it up. Cleaning the attic....who didn't know that was going to turn out? (I'll try not to give any spoilers, yet still complain about certain scenes.)
The bar is fire bombed. OK, good starter, lots of action coming...well, that scene lasted a few minutes & leads into an hour of Sookie whining about her singed hair & everyone trying to fix it. I mean, the girl isn't bald! The ends were a little singed!!
It's very obvious that Harris has been given the green light to use Bubba's real name & she's certainly taking advantage of it! (Getting that word count)
Harris is trying to keep ALL fans happy. Team Bill, yah, let's put Sookie naked & in his hidey hole! Team Sam, let's throw them him a bone too. Team Alcide...don't even get me started! I have only 2000 characters in this review! Let's just say, I was actually embarrassed for Ms.Harris at this point.
Before I end this, I must offer Sookie some advise: If a vampire is in your house, about to eat your fairy relative who is injured & unconscious, RESEND HIS INVITATION!
