My first read for Brenda Novak--glad I found her. I have been looking for another writer who does suspense as well as romance--I found her in Ms. Nov..Show More »ak. I am like the other person that gave her thoughts--the characters tended to fall in love very quickly (only reason I gave it a four), but I guess it can happen. No matter it was a good story and held my interest the entire time I was listening.
But I have said this in more than one of my reviews, the narrator can make or break the book. Angela Dawe is one of my favorite readers--way up on the todem pole. She does a stupendous job with this book. I am looking forward to listening to the next book about his (Virgil's) sister. Hopefully she will continue on with the series with the other character "Pretty Boy", since she it appears that Laurel and Pretty Boy did not hook up (at least I think that did not). I am downloading the second book as I am typing this.
Continuing from the first book of this series, the bad bad guys are still coming. It is not entirely believable they are coming for the sister rather ..Show More »than the brother, but for the cause of a new romance, that is understood as necessary. It might have been handled a little differently to make it more believable.
On to the star of the show. The sheriff is a real heart throb and definitely deserved to be the romantic star.
I love a trilogy - even though I think it's just another way to get readers (or listeners) to spend more money I like when I'm able to revisit the cha..Show More »ractors I've liked in the previous stories and how the stories build on each other. The first 2 books in this trilogy (Inside and In Seconds) were what I'd expect in a trilogy. The secondary characters from 'Inside' had their story told in the book 'In Seconds' and the main characters from 'Inside' were secondary characters in the second book. But, while the story line for 'In Close' takes place in the same town as 'In Seconds' there's no relationship at all in the story line. The first 2 books were about prison gangs and the third book was about a small town cover up and I don't think Peyton or Virgil (main characters from Inside) were even mentioned in this book. Furthermore, I really liked the charactor Rex a.k.a.Pretty Boy in the first 2 books. He was the type of charactor that you just can't help but root for...he saved the lives of 2 children along with both of the main charactors in each of the other 2 books. In the second book he was in love with the main character (Laurel) but she left him (for Miles - who's also a charactor in the third book). and he was also working to overcome a bad childhood and drug addiction. His story was completely dropped and he's never even mentioned in the thrid book! Hopefully he'll reappear in one of the authors other books so we're not left hanging! As a stand alone book 'In Close' is enjoyable and worth your time but if you're looking for a follow-up from the first 2 books in the trilogy you'll be very disappointed!
