I read this entire series back-to-back so I'm only going to comment on the first book's board.
I'm obsessed with this series. It's definitely..Show More » addicting...but by the end of the last book I'm still hanging and holding out for some major relationship development of the heroine. The author basically teases you throughout the series. You keep feeling like "Okay, this book will be the one", but then I'm disappointed by the end and left hanging.
The first two books were my favorite, especially book 2. Book 1 was hard to get into at first, because the world and its many casts of people are very difficult to grasp at first. By book 2, the confusion subsides. But book 2 is definitely worth working through the complicated world development of book 1. Book 2 is AMAZING!
I'm in a love/hate relationship with this author. I love her world (Elantra) and I love the characters. I even love the struggles and challenges and the main story lines. There is so much adventure and mystery! On the other side, it's sooooooo wordy!!! You're in the middle of an intense action/climatic scene and I feel like the intensity and build up get overtaken by the wordiness. It's almost like the author starts out on the right path of being wordy to tease and build up your emotions, but then just keeps going and going until you're like, "enough already, just get on with it...I get that the 'word' is complicated" (you'll know what I refer to when you read it - - not a spoiler).
The narrator is great, though! I'm definitely a huge fan of Khristine Hvam! She does a great job with all the character voices, keeping them separate and recognizable without needing to tell us who's speaking. After soooo many books and a building mass of characters, I'm amazed she keeps pulling out new voices.
I'm a critical person, so don't let my negative comments fool you. I definitely loved this whole series and recommend it. Just brace yourself for difficulty establishing the world and its characters at first, and then dealing with climatic wordiness with each book. If you can get past those, you'll really enjoy the action and adventure. Here's hoping the next two books (I read on the author's blog that book 8 will now be split in two because she had too much to say) will focus more on the heroine's relationship/romantic development. It's about time!
This is a really nice continuation of this series. When the author does a good job, the first in the series becomes my favorite in said series becaus..Show More »e it's the introduction to a brand new world. It isn't often for me that the second in the series is better than the first. This is one of those rare cases. The story was interesting though I missed Marcus since he didn't play as big of a role in this one. Hvam does a great job with voices. It's amazing how so many voices come from one woman.
I am only supposed to allow myself only so much time per nite. I keep breaking my personal rules .I listened to the first half twice because I wanted ..Show More »it to last longer. I didnt expect to enjoy these books as much as I have. The narrator is hipnotic . She has a firm grip on the characters personalities and the voices are consistant and unique per character.I hope you will enjoy this book and the series as much as I have.I can as of late, walk away from the TV to go listen to my books.Michelle Sagaras stories are imaginative and enveloping. On top of that Khristines portrayals are very consistant and enjoyable. Good job team.Thank you .
I will listen to this series again . This book in particular took me along with Kaylin through the adventure of this investigation. Then it got me in ..Show More »trouble with my self for the lack of sleep it caused. But I couldnt put it down,
It's a great story and it explains so much of some passages on the previous books. I read some reviews where it was said that there were holes in the..Show More » plot line but I believe that if not intentional (as cliff hangers) this book covers a lot of the "unexplained things", specially regarding her 6 month absence between the fifs and the hawks. Get it! You won't be sorry! I can't wait to hear the next one. I could probably read it because they are available in print but it won't be the same as Khristine Hvam brings so much to the plate and delivery of the story.. so I will patiently wait (sighs)..
Wow...this series is one I stumbled on because the first Novella was free, boy I am glad I did I have listened to each book so far, and was so frustra..Show More »ted that I made it through them all so quickly, I must admit I listened to while driving to and from work and while cooking so to be fair I was addicted. Its a great series and very powerful, I cant wait for the next book. Boy I hope she writes fast.
Decidedly the best one yet! and I know I say this about every last one that comes out but.. Michelle fascinates me with the stories. Tying the lose en..Show More »ds from each book on the next and always leaving something to be wondered. I love it!!! I am definitely looking forward to the next one and excited to see what's gonna come of the new introduced character.
I really love this series! I want the next one (Cast in Sorrow) now :)
Narrator - as always - wonderful job!
Story - I was really ho..Show More »ping to actually get to the West March but we don't in this book - though we do get to find out what is in the egg (I so want one). We get some really good back ground info on a couple people but alas we only get part way to the West March.
If you are this far along in the series you, like most everyone will enjoy the story as much as I did.
i have loved this series from the first. that being said, i feel it's time for Kaylin to grow up and mature. this is book 10 and still we listen to ..Show More »the tantrums, and the childishness of Kaylin as a 20 year old, that we listened to as a 13 year old. it is high time she be allowed to grow up by the author. i seriously missed the role of Nightshade, he was a vague mention at best. Severn had a small supporting part, Teela had a bit more, but nothing of consequence. all the old, well loved characters were sadly missing any importance in this book, and therefore was not as enjoyable a listen. i hope the appearance of new characters does not mean the beloved characters that make this series so good, will not be part of the core of the next book/s. it is a combination of these main characters of the first 9 books that make this series work. without them, the book falls short, as this one did.
Somehow the author makes you think that her theories of time, space, and magic make perfect sense, and you even start to think you understand them whi..Show More »le you are reading them. She creates a new reality in this series that is fascinating and engaging. Every time I finish one book, I start waiting for the next.
