They don’t go to jail. They’re smart. It’s fun to be in this world for a change. A few times I’m delighted or surprised with something. I liked the plot in this one.

This wasn’t as good as some of the others in the series, but it was ok. I’m intrigued with Parker, and that keeps me reading.

Edgars has an ..Show More »idea for stealing from several businesses at the same time in a North Dakota town. He tells a guy who brings in Parker to plan and run it. It will require 12 to 20 guys.

The ending was weak. Things felt hanging and not wrapped up well. I would have liked a different ending for some of the good guys who were victims. And I wanted something really bad to happen to Edgars. What happened to him was not painful enough.

Parker is trying to figure it out. Then Parker kills someone which shocked me. I shouldn’t like this because he killed a kind-of-good person. But the “shock” was what I liked. And the ending I liked. It seemed Parker had everything all nice and neat and packaged, and then a little thread here and there didn’t fit. The investigating cop pulled, and things began unraveling. The result was twists and turns that I did not expect.

I laughed several times. It starts slow but good later.

I liked being in his head when he was thinking why he had to follow Parker. Because if he wasn’t always behind Parker, Parker might get behind him. He would have been smarter just to leave town, but he doesn’t - for weird reasons, and I bought it.

Cops are investigating the murder of a woman in Parker’s room and also the robbery that Parker was behind. The murderer stole the loot hidden in Parker’s room before it was divided. So now Parker and his buddies are investigating to get the money back.

CAUTION SPOILER:
I was shocked when Parker went to the homicide detective asking for information to use in his own search - and the cop gave it to him. Parker was a suspect!

A fun scene: The Outfit assigned Crystal to help Parker with part of the job. They were on a boat going to an island. She talked too much. Parker discovered the way to handle her. When she paused he grunted. She turned his grunts into whatever words she wanted to hear and went on with her monologue again. She’s deathly afraid of water. She asked Parker “If this boat sinks or anything you won’t leave me or anything will you? You’ll help me get to shore?” If the boat sank Parker knew this girl would be hysterical and would drown with her anyone she could get her hands on. If the boat sank, Parker would get as far from her as he could as fast as possible. But he said “I’ll help you. Don’t worry about it.”

The Forward by Luc Sante was insightful. A few of his comments follow, edited for brevity. “When I read my first Parker novel, I was stunned. I imagined that I had stumbled upon a particularly brilliant specimen of a thriving genre. But I was wrong. There is no such genre... Stark said that he meant the books to be about a workman at work. Process and mechanics and troubleshooting dominate the books. Stark portrays a world of total amorality. It is never suggested in the novels that robbing payrolls or shooting people who present liabilities are anything more than business practices... As brilliant as Parker is as a strategist, he is nothing short of phenomenal at instantly grasping character. This means that he sometimes sounds more like a fictional detective than a crook. In order to decide which path the double crosser he is pursuing is most likely to have taken, or which member of the string is most likely to double cross, or the odds on a reasonable sounding job that has just been proposed to him by someone with shaky credentials, he has to get all the way under the skin of the party in question.”

THE SET UP:
There are three groups of guys from a small African nation. The A guys wor..Show More »k for the President. The B guys work for a General who plans to take over with a military coup. C is a guy who stole millions from the African treasury and converted it to diamonds. C’s people are holding the diamonds for him in New York City.

The A guys pay a fee to Parker to plan a heist and teach them how to do it - to steal the diamonds from C’s people. The B guys threaten Parker, telling him not to help A. D is another guy who comes in to steal the diamonds.

OPINION:
Most of the story is meeting the different guys and Parker planning the heist. That was ok, but it wasn’t engaging or exciting. The last part was very good. Unexpected things happen, things go wrong, Parker is in the middle and takes action. I liked the way Parker solved a kidnaping - bad guy style.

I was disappointed the author did not tell how the bad guys knew where E was in order to kidnap E.

So the rest of the book is watching Parker survive the double cross and then hunt George in various places across the country. I had no idea how Parker would be able to find someone who was on the run and in hiding, but he does. Good suspense, interesting writing, very enjoyable.

A mother and children are held hostage by someone other than Parker. It’s a small part of the story and did not end badly. But some readers might want to know.

This is about a heist from a riverboat gamb..Show More »ling casino. The plans are a little more intricate than normal, including getting a guy to pretend to be a politician with body guards. A woman pretends to be wheelchair bound. The main suspense is after the heist when other parties make a play for the money. The best part was when a bad cop put Parker in handcuffs. I enjoyed the way Parker got out of that one.

This was different in that Parker needed help when he was shot and in..Show More » the hospital. He had to trust and rely on a woman he recently met. I love the way Parker gets revenge on people who cross him which he does here. I liked what Parker did to the bad guys’ hideout home and guns.

I especially liked one line. Parker is describing to Leslie how the bad guys are going to rob a charity auction - coming in or leaving by sea wearing scuba gear. Leslie said “Like James Bond.” Parker said “More like Jaws.” These are really bad guys - not cool like James Bond.

The narrator Mark Peckham was ok, but his voice for Parker didn’t fit. He made Parker sound too normal. I prefer Keith Szarabajka.

I did not read that book but others say it’s important to this story. The guys can’t spend the money because the serial numbers are known. This story is about how to get the money out of the church and launder it. The authorities have roadblocks and pictures of the guys. Parker is one of the guys. Others find out about the money and try for it.

I was surprised with who Parker contacted to solve the money problem. It’s important to read Firebreak before this book to appreciate this part.

My mind wandered.

There seemed to be more characters than normal in this book. Toward the end I was confused about some of them. Maybe beca..Show More »use a lot was going on in my personal life. Or maybe the book wasn’t as good as others in the series.

There are two stories. The better story is about a hit man after Parker. It’s a continuation with Paul and Max who Parker met in Bk 12 “The Sour Lemon Score.” I loved the scene where Parker gets to them. It reminded me of feelings of fear in the movie “Jaws.”

The second story is about stealing art from a hunting lodge in Montana. An interesting part of that story was Parker interacting with a young-computer-hacker-genius. But the rest of the story about the heist was muddled. It might be better read than listened to. Not sure.

I was disappointed that the 2011 Forward by Terry Teachout was in the physical book but not in this audiobook. I’ve enjoyed all the forwards in this series.
