STORY - Something About You is a sexy romance story commingled with an FBI investigation. Due to animosity between Jack and Cameron, the romance mov..Show More »es slowly in the beginning but kicks into high gear by the end. The murder investigation has a lot going on, too, so there's more than just the romance to keep things interesting.
I previously listened to Book 3 in this series, titled "About That Night," which is my #1 favorite romance novel to date. This book is almost as good but not quite. I love this series because I like contemporary romances with smart, sexy, witty characters and also the legal/FBI aspect that is the background for the series. Julie James writes only a couple of steamy scenes into her books, which is just the right amount, in my opinion. The books stand alone so they can be read out of order, but Book 3 (which I read first) had some minor references to Cameron and Jack that were supposed to be updates but meant nothing to me because I hadn't heard their story (It's not a big deal, though).
PERFORMANCE - I wish Karen White would narrate more romance novels. Her natural voice is low enough to actually sound decent when she does a man's voice. I hate it when the couple is getting amorous and Romeo sounds like a wimp!
OVERALL - (Precise rating 4.5) Highly recommended as long as you like or are not offended by hot scenes and a moderate amount of cursing.
Story - This book has likeable, strong, smart lead characters. The plot has an interesting legal aspect which makes the background story interesting,..Show More » and the way the characters meet and continue their romance is clever and romantic. They have serious chemistry for each other, which culminates in a couple pretty detailed, steamy episodes in the bedroom. The computer hacking element is a hoot, and so is some of the banter between the characters. My favorite is "Like Bambi taking his first steps"..... it's priceless! I wouldn't change anything about this story. It has everything you could hope for in a romantic novel.
Narrator - Good job. She does mispronounce a couple words, but it doesn't detract from the story. The male voice she gives Kyle is okay (it doesn't sound adolescent or nasally), but some female readers can do much better men.
Overall - If you like contemporary romance, you will probably love this book.
The witty banter in the book is well written and well performed. What I didn't like is the fact that the premise of this series is characters associa..Show More »ted with the FBI and the US Attorneys office. The first in the series used the premise well for an excellent Romantic-Suspense. The following 3 editions of this series are pretty much straight contemporary romance with very little, if any, suspense/mystery/action in the plot. A bit boring for my taste.
I loved practically everything about this romantic tale. It's the story of two folk in their 30s coming together after disliking each other. The roman..Show More »ce unfolds perfectly; there was no rushing nor the constant pushing and pulling against what they want. That's not to say that the coming together was without angst; it was there but appropriately so. I also liked that the h, Sidney, was the white-collar employee who made lots of money, while the H, Vaughn, was a basic, blue-collar FBI agent. And there was only one perfect family but not so much drama that you're weighed down by it and find a HEA hard to envision. To add to the great mix of romance, lil' angst, and good sex--about 2 sex scenes--there was the perfect amount of light humor.
The only reason this story is not a 5 for me is that I generally like more struggle or an element of darkness to a story. So this light romance was super smile-worthy, but I only want so much of it at a time. Still, I look forward to my next Julie James book. It was great.
