I actually despise what most people call "chick lit" and lots of people have described the Undead series by MaryJanice Davidson as chick lit meets vam..Show More »pires.
I suppose that is an accurate description, but the reason I hate chick lit (in general) and the reason I find this book so hilarious is basically the same: a really shallow-seeming heroine. Here the shallowness isn't complete (Betsy has her moments and you can see that she has some deeper feelings, if you search really hard for them), but the very shallowness is part of the reason these books are so funny.
The Queen of the Vampires is obsessed with shoes? Designer names? What anyone and everyone is wearing? Too funny!
Nancy Wu, who gives voice to Betsy in this first person novel, is letter perfect. She sounds just like Betsy did in my head when I read "Undead and Unwed" for the first time.
Give this book a chance, even if you aren't a chick lit fan. You won't regret it.
Did the other reviewer listen to the same book I did? I absolutely love this series, and have listened to all 5 multiple times.
I love this boo..Show More »k because Queen Betsy **is** such a shallow, vacuous "valley girl" type. It's funny & I think the narrator does an excellent job of portraying Betsy in all her vain & shallow glory.
I liked this series alot. It's fun and shallow, and Betsy has some hilarious lines. The narrator's interpretation of how Sinclair speaks is kind of ..Show More »dumb, but you get used to it. If you enjoyed Southern Vampire Mysteries, you should like this too.
This was definitely a fun romp. Lots of action, fun, romance and sex. :) If you're looking for a easy and fun listen, this one is for you. The reader ..Show More »did a great job bringing all the voices to life as well. Two thumbs up!
I'm still trying to figure out what happened with this book. The narrator (all though the same person) read this book at a snails pass and paused for ..Show More »what seemed like 30 seconds at the end of each statement. I also felt like I was missing information in this book...Like who is this werewolf chick and when did the fiend become super normal. I've listen to the other four unabridged books and still can't find any mention of this women...This book makes me not want to listen to the other four books...
This series is funny, however, it seems like the later books are getting shorter and shorter so the author can milk the revenue. The books are also g..Show More »etting more expensive. While I like the stories and her sense of humor, I am debating whether or not to continue the series. I read a note from the author somewhere else that thanks to her readers she now can wear the expensive shoes the main character loves, perhaps she needs a new protagonist instead of resting on her laurels. I will have to support another up and coming author who knows how to respect her audience, instead of bragging to them about how she went from struggling to pay her bills to being able to wear Jimmy Choo's. Get your priorities straight and give your readers their moneys worth.
I am embarrassed to suggest the undead shoe loving vampire series to my friends but I truely enjoy the Betsey books. The audio makes me laugh out lou..Show More »d- a great light-hearted listen. This latest is a good as the rest
I have been a Betsy fan from Book 1, and I did enjoy this one - although I will agree with other reviewers that it is quite short.
In pre..Show More »vious books, I always felt that there were multiple storylines going on, some resolved early, and some that lasted the "length" of the book. I felt that this book had only two storylines, both of which were resolved "early". :)
Short, but still good - I waited until I had a $10 credit to pick it up, since it was only 4-5 hours long.
I've listened to all of this series.....some have been better than others. This one has taken a lot of flack review-wise on Amazon. I have to agree ..Show More »with most of what is being said: Betsy seems more dumb and oblivious than ever. Although I did like the time travel elements of the story. The ending is shocking; a complete 180 in what you expect from this series. I really feel this is half a book, it ends at the peak of the plot-line. Unfinished is part of the title and I guess I should have taken that as a warning. I'm sure I would not have been so disappointed if I had the next in the series (i.e. the other half of this book) to read immediately after finishing this one. It's not like this book ends with a cliff-hanger so that you cant wait for the next one. It just stops, there isn't an ending. So my recommendation is to wait until next July and read the two together.....you'll be less pissed off that way.
In the beginning I LOVED this series because of the humor and the situations Betsy got herself into. The books were funny but now im sooooo disappoint..Show More »ed. Its book 10 and the character show no growth, she still self centered, never listens, and complains constantly. I would have thought by now the author would have given her a little more depth then what she has. Also this book spent alot of time telling us things that happened in the previous books which was completely unnecessary. This will be my last Besty book which i hate to say, but her character no longer interest me. I wish the author would have spent more time in developing her character into someone who has learn from her previous mistakes and come out a little smarter and stronger because of that fact instead of all the dumb and totally unnecessary commentary that fills this book.
However, I felt the author was meeting her word count with Betsy's tirades rather than actually advancing the plot. This is why I gave it a 3 for stor..Show More »y. I still listened to this non-stop which, for me, is a good thing. I like the original Laura and didn't care for the direction the books are taking with her character. I also thought Sinclair was turning into a wimp. On the plus side, I liked the way the major issue was resolved. I hope Ms Davidson continues to bring the series back up to her earlier standards.
