I beg to differ from the other reviewers. I believe the late Frederick Davidson (aka David Case) was without exception the best reader of audiobo..Show More »oks. Although I agree that this reading is slightly below his usual standard, Davidson below par is still better than most other readers at their best. The novel is the first sequel to The Three Musketeers and, although there is a bit less humor in this work, if you liked the original you will probably like this sequel.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story...that is to say the part which I listened to. The description of this book leads one to believe that it's the entire..Show More » novel. However, it was broken into two parts and the second part "Louise de la Valliere" is not yet available on Audible. I am rather annoyed because I have no idea now when I'll be able to see how the story ended. If you like to hear a complete story like me, ensure that the second half is available before downloading this book. That being said, if the second half is as good as the first then I would definitely recommend this.

This story seems quaint and very subtle by modern standards.

Large tracts are devoted to the minutiae of French royalty and the surround..Show More »ing courtiers, where sometimes there is a very long and (impeccably narrated) winding road to reach a climax where one of several gallant knights squeezes one of several ladies-in-waiting hands or some other equally scandalous body part.

I suppose this must have titillated in it's day, but it really doesn't measure up to the excitement of "The 3 Musketeers", "20 Years After" or even "The Man in the Iron Mask", which follows on from this, and is well enough written that you could probably jump from "Le Vicomte de Bragelonne" to "The Man in the Iron Mask" without losing much in the bargain.
