This is a prequel to The Bastion Club stories that I've waited for. It's NOT a Cynster or Bastion story. It has a flavor all it's own. But I have to s..Show More »ay that Captain Jack is rather like Devil Cynster in that he's autocratic. Kit might be the standard for the Cynster women in later books. She's fearless and a perfect mate for Captain Jack.
The story has plenty of romance and a LOT of sex in it with a slight mystery. I like that the plot has spies in it--but that's a personal favorite of mine.
If you enjoy Stephanie Laurens stories...the Bastion Club and the Cynsters, you'll enjoy this one, too.
My only complaint is that I never knew that George had an accent. LOL.
The story is absolutely RUINED because of this mono tone - BORING narration. I think Larry king would tell this better. There is no creative narrat..Show More »ion throughout the book and she sounds as bored reading it as she is being listened to. I LOVE Simon Prebble in the Cynster series - why change for this?
If you have staying power and are a die hard SL fan, then grin and bare it. this is my second Jill Tanner purely out of being an SL fan, but it will be my last from this narrator. she can make a sunny day dull just by uttering a single sound.
what a shame.
Compared to Amanda Quick and Susan Elizabeth Peters whose characters and plots are fantastic this authors are very weak and made even weaker by the fa..Show More »ct that the stories are twice as long. On the other hand Ms. Laurens knows how to write great sex scenes which begin slowly and grow in intensity with each encounter. For this reason alone I plan to try another of her books and hope that the next plot and the dialogue has greater depth and complexity.
Lovely, well written emotional mystery/drama with sensual detail without being pornography. The regency period written the right way. The narrator is ..Show More »excellent. Vocal characterizations with distinctive expertize.
I really enjoyed this Audio Book. I'm a Laurens fan, have been for years, but I would not recommend for that reason only. The characters were well fle..Show More »shed out, with depth, and there's an interesting story line. I've read or listened to all of the Bastion Club series; this was one of the best. The last two are out now. I sincerely hope Audible makes them available, in UNABRIDGED format! Laurens books (& many others) are not worth the listen/read in Abridged format. It makes them just a string of empty sex with barely enough story line to hold it together. NOT what most women want or like. Distasteful!
This is one of Stephanie Laurens best books! In my top 5 of romance books. Never a dull or slow moment, as in some of her other books. The character..Show More »s and little sub-plots are wonderful The Grand Dames are hysterical! Hammish, Royce's half-brother, is great too, as are Royce's sisters. The book paints a delightful picture of life on the castle estate with Royce's handling of situations showing a different, softer, side of Royce. The sex scenes are sizzling, and the dialogue and dynamics between the lovers is some of Laurens' best.
Laurens brings in many of the characters in the series, as well as reveals who the Last Traitor is. It would be best if one had read the other books in the series first, although the love story is strong enough, the book would still be great as a stand-alone. Part of the fun of the book, however, comes from knowing Royce's personality and history, as well as the wrap-up of the Last Traitor sub-plot. Without having read the other books, it would be hard to understand this part of the story.
Crossley does a good job with the narration, but the female voices are not as good as Simon Preble's. I particuarly didn't like Minerva's voice (the lead female character), but after awhile you get used to it.
The book is compelling and a super read! I had read the book before listening to the audio, but still stayed up half the night not able to take a break. Get this one, you won't be dissapointed.
