This is a wonderful series with great characterization and complex plot, lots of political machinations without becoming bogged down. This is not jus..Show More »t a tolkein clone, Butcher has created new creatures and magic system. as well as intresting characters that are complex not just cardboard cutouts. I would love to see more of his books as audio.
The only annoyance is the random trumpet noise that I have to assume announced the end of a cassette or a CD originally.
Overall a great series well written adn well read.
If you like the Miles Vorkosagan Series by Lois McMaster Bujold then you will like this one as well. Each has a main character with a major handicap ..Show More »that uses his brain to overcome tremendous odds and do amazing things. The characterization and plots are both really fun. I highly recommend this entire series to any one who likes the Vorkosagan series and vice versa.
This review applies to the series. Normally, I listen to sci-fi and decided to give this fantasy series a try because of the high ratings the books g..Show More »ot at Amazon, and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. The characters are excellent, the plot good, etc. The first book takes a little getting use to the new concept of furies and the author doesn't really try to explain how one gets these furies powers. (This probably explains some of the poor reviews on the 1st book) He does implied that it is genetic, but how many people in today's society really understand genetics? Who's ya daddy! The sixth book of this series is due out in November and I looking forward to it.
Kate Reading does one of the best jobs of narration in this series that I've heard anywhere! If you like a narration performance, you'll like this one. Lots of blood and guts, but very, very few 4-ltr words, if you dont count CROWs; - this series swear word.
Audible needs to cross-reference these audio books with the book reviews in Amazon, their parent company (I believe). This is especially true where there are few or no reviews on the book. Just a note about my high 5-star ratings - I usually only rate books that I really enjoy, hence high ratings in all my rating history. Hope this helps!
This series has kept me hooked for months, not only through a flowing story of strong characters but also with Kate Reading. She captures every aspect..Show More » of the characters without the slightest hesitation, through her the emotion that black type couldn't fully throw out was felt through tone and depth. The Romanic spin about the stories were also clever, Jim didn't over exert his skill by placing unmemorable places and objects within his world. Not to say other Fantasy writers have this as a fault, but this material is laid out for anyone to pick up and immerse themselves without little effort. From beginning to end, you grow up with Tavi, you begin to understand the Highlord's decisions, and you just can't help but to wish harm onto the enemies of the Realm.
Great Book. Fantastic Narrator. Engrossing Series.
The best so far of this great series, expertly narrated by Kate Reading (I was already a fan of hers from The Wheel of Time series). This fifth book w..Show More »as so generous and satisfying that by the end I feared for a moment that it was the final book. Of course that's not the case, and I'm really looking forward to First Lord's Fury, due to come out near the end of the year!
This book was an excellent conclusion to the series. It's so good to see an author stick to his guns and tie up a series on time! He's left enough r..Show More »oom for future books in the series. Looking forward to seeing some new books in the next few years; however, I'm also really looking forward to Jim's new SciFi series :) If you're a fan of the series this book will not disappoint!
