I bought this title, thinking it would be a good thing to listen to on my commute to work. I read the original several years bac and remember it bein..Show More »g quite a read, but excellent. It was filled with descriptions, strong characters and involved plotlines. All of that has been whittled away here to fit a 3hr. legnth. What remains bears scant resemblance to the original title and sounds like a very amaturish radio scripted version. I was very dissapointed in this purchase. I mena REALLY, the whole story is lobotomized - huge chunks are missing and it really is dissapointing when the original was such a fantastic book. The only thing I can say in favor of this audible version is that the narrator has a very cool voice and handles the material excellently, given that most of it is missing! I would really like to hear him read the book in it's entirety, as his voice is perfect for the type of tale The Sword of Shannara is. Sadly though- this version lacks everything that made the original so fantastic.
Don't buy this version- look for an unabridged instead
This book is very good, I have read it. This abridgement is bad, it elimates most of the character development. The result is that you have a great s..Show More »tory that is filled with strangers you hardly know. It makes the abridgment hard to connect with. Brooks is a talented author and very good at developing his characters so you know and love them. This abridgment is a huge disservice to his talents.
I'm disappointed to see that this book isn't available in an unabridged version after listening to the unabridged First King of Shannara and unabridge..Show More »d Sword of Shannara. Especially when it picks back up after this book with an unabridged Wishsong of Shannara. Seems like somebody dropped the ball on this one.
Terry Brooks first 6 shannara novels are characterized by LONG sweeping plotlines. You simply cannot call 20+ hours of material cut to 3 hours, a stor..Show More »y. This book has been turned into an extended summary. To be honest, Abridging has no place in modern audiobooks, but when it's applied to such long works (like Cryptonomicon, or Tom Clancy books), it becomes comical. My question is simple: Why carry these books at all? Are we expected to enjoy 26 hours of The Sword of Shannara, and 24 hours of the Wishsong of Shannara, seperated by THREE of this? Give me a break.
With a gentle innocence the author presents an adventure into a land of fantasy ;a world of Magic, Druids, Elves, Half-Men and odd creatures, all in a..Show More »n era of near middle earth. The story well painted by its author and narrator draws you in promising not to let you go. An excellent first listen especially for those who are young at heart. A delightful storey! I highly recommend this book!
