Lina is just like any other 15-year-old Lithuanian girl in 1941. She paints, she draws, she gets crushes on boys - until one night when Soviet officers barge into her home, tearing her family from the comfortable life they've known. Separated from her father, forced onto a crowded and dirty train car, Lina, her mother, and her young brother slowly make their way north, crossing the Arctic Circle, to a work camp in the coldest reaches of Siberia.

The Giant Oak Tree is home to numerous animals, and the eldest raccoon is in charge of all that happens there. The animals loved living in the tree, and got along with each other perfectly. Mr. Raccoon lived inside the hollowed-out tree, and the birds roosted on its high branches. Even the squirrels lived quite comfortably in their nests made of leaves. But honeybees move into the small hole at the top of the giant oak, and they are soon becoming an unwelcome neighbor.
