World War I is raging in Europe. Charlie Newell, a religious Southern Negro tenant farmer who believes war is wrong and holds Saturday sacred as a day for prayer and no work, seeks conscientious objector status from the draft. His request is denied and he is forced into the racially prejudiced U.S. Army of that time. Assigned to work in the stables he refuses an officer's direct order to work Saturday, is court-martialed, and sentenced to 10 years at hard labor.
Ben Perry and his puppy, Panda, are afraid to go to sleep at night. His other two beagles help to calm and assure them both it will be okay. Penny shares valuable lessons about dealing with the fears she learned when she was just a puppy.
Ben Perry gets a new puppy. While two of his other beagles welcome the new puppy into the home, Ben's third dog, Panda, becomes jealous and would like to send the new puppy back. Ben soon finds out that he, too, will have to share his family with another sibling.
Ben and Panda watch as nature unfolds right in their own backyard as Mrs. Perry shows them her daisies sprouting up through the garden soil. Panda becomes inpatient with the tiny seedling and becomes inquisitive and digs the tiny plant up by accident.
A small boy runs away from home in Portugal. He jumps onto a ship and hides. Not knowing his destination, he is found by the ships cook, while at sea. He trembles as he is found out and then has to tell the captain why he is aboard. As his saga begins, they help him to his first destination...South America. Finding his way to North America becomes more frightening, until Sallie, his guardian angel, comes to his aid to help him in his journey.
