When Jim Maddern – well-respected police sergeant and pillar of the local community – begins to act completely out of character, ex-Met officer John Cannon is concerned. As Cannon tries to find out what has got Maddern so spooked, he discovers that death threats have been sent to Maddern and his family via the local paper after Maddern stumbled on the paperboy's criminal lineage.
Ex-Met officer John Cannon is entangled in trouble from the moment he vaults a stile on an early morning run and becomes ensnarled in a discarded fishing-line. The macabre discovery at the far end of this lines leads John into a search for a missing au pair, conflict with the local newspaper and international crime. He follows the trail of a ruthless Portuguese businessman who owns a local Health Spa, where much is concealed and a team of security guards with dogs patrol the grounds.
John Cannon gave up his Metropolitan Police career for his partner, Liz Makepeace, when he took revenge on those who had hurt her whilst she was working undercover. Now the troubled couple must make a new life for themselves as proprietors of “The Trap”, a Fenland public house. In time, and with growing acceptance from the locals, they find happiness. They have come to love this strange land of marshes and dykes – but their past has not done with them yet.
