"The Oval Portrait" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe involving the disturbing circumstances surrounding a portrait in a chateau. "The Fall of the House of Usher" is a narrative short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1839 in Burton's Gentleman's Magazine before being included in the collection Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque in 1840. The short story is a work of detective fiction and includes themes of madness, family, isolation, and metaphysical identities.

After receiving a letter from his boyhood friend that he is suffering from some sort of debilitating illness, a man feels compelled to travel to a reclusive mansion to assist him. He learns that his friend and his deathly-ill sister are the last in the Usher line, slowly collapsing into madness. The Gothic mansion seems to have a bizarre metaphysical connection with the brother and sister, and there are incredibly strange occurrences that continue to happen late at night.
