L'elfo scuro Drizzt è riuscito finalmente a lasciarsi alle spalle la città sotterranea di Menzoberranzan e tutte le terribili nefandezze della sua patria d'origine, oltre che il vuoto indescrivibile del Buio Profondo entro cui ha vissuto per ben dieci anni.

Pubblicato nel 1990 col titolo "Il dilemma di Drizzt", "Il buio profondo" è il primo capitolo della Trilogia degli Elfi Oscuri, ambientata nei Forgotten Realms. Protagonista delle serie – nonché personaggio senz'altro fra i più noti mai creati da Salvatore – è Drizzt Do'Urden, nobile elfo scuro che abita nella città sotterranea di Menzoberranzan insieme a ventimila altri suoi consimili.
