L'action de "Notre-Dame de Paris", qui comprend onze livres, débute le 6 janvier 1482. Elle s'étend sur six mois et se termine en juillet. En ce jour de l'épiphanie, dans la grande salle du palais de justice, se joue le "Bon jugement de madame la Vierge", un mystère dont l'auteur n'est autre que le poète Pierre Gringoire. Mais la représentation est interrompue afin de permettre l'élection du pape des fous à la manière flamande, c'est-à-dire au moyen d'un concours de grimaces.
