Hailed as the father of the naturalist novel, French author and playwright Honoré de Balzac left a legacy of treasured literary works that include Père Goriot and Cousin Bette. The daughter of a wealthy but miserly man, Eugénie Grandet falls in love with her penniless cousin, Charles. The two plan to marry, but at the behest of her father, Charles must first go overseas to make his fortune. Returning years later, Charles calls off the engagement, leaving Eugénie heartbroken and vengeful.

At the beginning of the story the heroine lives an unfulfilled life in rural France, her nature crushed by a domineering and miserly father. Gallant cousin Charles arrives and acts as a catalyst on Eugénie's personality and emotions. Will her love survive the strong self-opinion of the young man and the selfishness of her father or is Eugénie's reward destined to be in heaven?

Dans la ville de Saumur vit modestement la famille Grandet : le père Felix Grandet ex-tonnelier devenu richissime après de fructueuses spéculations, son épouse, sa fille Eugénie et Nanon la servante. Ces trois femmes subissent au quotidien son avarice sordide, ses colères de despote.

Ces trois femmes vivent sous la terrible coupe du chef de famille, avaricieux maladif. Dans le voisinage, les beaux partis se disputent l’hypothétique main d’Eugénie dans l’espoir d’épouser la fortune. Mais un évènement imprévu va venir bouleverser cet ordonnancement : le cousin d’Eugénie, un dandy parisien, fils du frère du père Grandet, débarque un soir, porteur d’une missive pour son oncle.

Le père d'Eugénie Grandet a été tonnelier. Grâce à un sens aigu des affaires et une grande avarice, il a réussi à faire fortune en profitant des événements de cette époque instable. Autrefois maire de Saumur, il fait maintenant fructifier sa grande fortune tout en faisant croire à sa femme et à sa fille qu'ils ne sont pas bien riches. Les habitants de Saumur, plus au courant de la fortune du père Grandet, voient en sa fille Eugénie le plus beau parti de la ville et la courtisent donc ardemment.

La storia di Eugénie è ambientata a Saumur, piccolo paesino della campagna francese. Il padre di Eugénie, che in città è conosciuto come papà Grandet, è un vecchio vignaiuolo arricchitosi grazie all'eredità paterna fatta fruttare tramite giusti investimenti finanziari, ha un fiuto infallibile per gli affari e ad una proverbiale avarizia, che suscita in lui un notevole attaccamento all'oro che “sembrava aver comunicato il suo colore al suo viso”. Nonostante la sua ricchezza, quindi, il padrone di casa fa di tutto per nasconderla, non parlarne e, soprattutto, non spenderla.
