Tale of The Manticore, a Dark Fantasy Dungeons & Dragons Audiodrama

By: Jon Cohen
  • Summary

  • Tale of the Manticore is a hybrid between a dark fantasy audio drama and a solo D&D RPG. The dice make all the important decisions and, as a writer, my job is to interpret them and tell their story. Part fiction, part game, it’s the story where ”Chaos rolls.”

So much fun

Dear Mr. Manticore,
I hate you, I love you, thanks very much! Having finally caught up through episode 29 of season 2, I am writing to say that I am now prepared to declare victory in our on-going debate concerning certain lethal rulings (aided by your infernal dice-minions!) that you made regarding a particular, and now-deceased party member. I understand that since we have never met, nor spoken, nor in anyway ever been introduced, you may not have been aware that these dialogs were occurring or that we have been fighting like grumpy old men ever since you killed my favorite priest, but I assure you that our debates have been on-going and vigorous. Naturally, I have made numerous salient and compelling points regarding the ethics of harpy songs and saving throws versus petrification vis-a-vis modern norms of social justice. Surely, had you actually been a participant in these discussions you would have experienced profound enlightenment and perhaps a wee bit of remorse about that whole priest-killing thing. Therefore, sir, I am writing to quibble, grumble, and otherwise express my deeply-faux disapproval toward the manner in which you succeed in making me care about these characters and then persist in endangering them with your dastardly dice in one episode after another. Terrible. Just terrible. And magnificent. And so, although I am thoroughly vexed with your reckless tendency to roll for wandering monsters whenever the wind blows, my insatiable greed for the next episode instead compels me to offer my heartfelt appreciation and congratulations for a most excellent creative endeavor. You have taken something very old and very cherished and made it new again. Bravo!

A Wonderful Diversion

I'm afraid words will fail to impart just how awesome this podcast is! It's engaging and entertaining. There is real character growth with characters that feel more like flesh and blood people than mere stats on paper. This is the D&D game I want to play in!

Hard boiled

Definitely feel like a table top game. The only problem is that it needs a larger cast of voices.

True to the soul of D&D

This podcast is a jewel among gems - the story and characters constantly surprise and amaze you, the evolution is organic and die-driven - even when there is a death in the party, there is no flinching or ruleslawyering. I love the authenticity, attention to detail that does not bog the pace down and the leaps the story takes. Additionally, the music and sound effects as well as the visiting characters are solid gold. Check out the website and the the Youtube channel, too!

Good Time Interrupted

I am writing this review from the 37th episode.

Overall the story is fun and low-powered (something I dearly miss in a world of god-slaying murder hobos). I enjoy the more serious tone and character development; it feels like a low power world of Diablo 1. Again, this is all fantastic.

That said, the damn ads are ruining it. The story-teller bemoans breaking suspension of disbelief over a too-smooth poem/riddle because the translation should not be exact. It makes you really feel good about things, five seconds later there is braying laughter and some guy telling you about his podcast which is everything this one isn't.

It feels like the author's damn fine work is being pulled down by the least original repetitive podcasts one can find. I am hoping that if I stick around the ads will diminish as he gets more popular. I am betting my opinion is in the minority and he'll soon be enjoying good enough viewership to remove in-content ads.
