  • Summary

  • A young American woman meets her British boyfriend’s family for first time at a wedding in Ireland. Funny, sympathetic and warm, this story brilliantly dissects the unique discomfort and casual absurdities that come from being the outsider in a series of first experiences: to a country, a culture, a home, and as the newcomer to a family.

I especally liked "The Irish Wedding".

However, the ending was very abrupt and unexpected. I wanted more! I'll have to try one of McCracken's novels.

A Wedding Sampler

None of the characters are Irish but each group identifies with their cultural idiosyncrasies. Neither can find the humor in someone else’s joke and are constantly miscommunicating with one another. It was satirical and good natured in describing the characters’ words and actions.
