What the Critics Say

"The strength of this book is that it is a straightforward motivational tool. He provides the brutally direct truth about the hard work it takes to become free of debt, and his directness is a great part of the book's charm." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Don't Bother"
By Louise (Waynesville, NC, USA) Jun 7, 2008
This is a complte waste of time for anyone who isn't wasting money like a drunken sailor.

I also am not interested in the Christian lectures.

    "Brash"
By Steve (Whitby, ON, Canada) Feb 22, 2005
Content is simple. The author be-littles other advice books and authors, talks to you like you are a child, and tries to bully you into saving money. He sounds like a guy full of rage, stuck in traffic. If his advice was great, would he really need the attitude and tone to help sell you on it?
Don't spend money now, and you'll have a great life later. That's the story.
Take the $14 and put it in the bank instead of buying this book. That will be a great start to your "Money makeover".

    "The Total Money Makeover"
By Charlotte (Mount Juliet, TN, USA) Dec 8, 2003
Easily digestible book that provides sound elementary financial advice such as, people should spend less than they earn. True, it's not novel advice, but with a nation of debtors, there are a lot of people that can benefit from this basic advice. The book is filled with real stories that many listeners may find helpful to compare their own situation to. I found it reinforced what I already know and I will recommend it to family/friends in need. For the higher level reader, you may be interested in Smart Couples Finish Rich. Both books offer a step by step plan that anyone can follow. Again, it's not rocket science: people need to spend less than they earn to finish rich, or to win! Good luck.

    "not too useful....."
By David (garland, TX, USA) Apr 10, 2009

    "Too simplistic."
By Gregory (Largo, FL, USA) Aug 23, 2006
As many of the other reviews state, it is a "common sense" approach to managing your money. So the recommendations he offers includes: don't buy cars at "buy here / pay here" car lots, don't ever do "rent to own" programs, avoid leasing cars, etc. His recommendations are TOO "common sense." So I was pretty disappointed. I was hoping more for strategies that I could use to improve my financial status. None of his recommendations applied to me. Also, I did not appreciate how he talked down to the listener. Seriously, he speaks to the listner like they are a spoiled little child. In sum, if you are like me and you don't fall for the "buy here/pay here" and "rent to own" scams, then you should look for another book on finance.

"This is a Really Tough Listen"
By Rebecca (Lakewood, CO, USA) Oct 29, 2009
The content seems good but I am only 31 minutes in and already tearing the earplugs out! Don't Preach at me. Just tell me. He goes over every point relentlessly and in such a condescending manner. I don't know if I can keep listening!

    "Recommended read, not listen"
By Cynthia (Springville, UT, USA) Aug 30, 2008
The narration/reading of this book made me wonder if it was written in all capitals and italics. While I appreciated the information/ideas shared by the author, I didn't appreciate him yelling at me. I understand he's trying to motivate, but the intensity of his voice was just too much.

"No Content, Not worth the time to listen"
By David (North York, ON, Canada) Dec 23, 2005
The only thing I got from this audiobook is that a $1000 cash "emergency fund" is VERY important when trying to get out of debt. The rest is just different variations of sentences telling the listener how much they need a Money Makeover.

    "mixed emotions"
By Saul (ZapopanMexico) Jun 25, 2010
A GREAT BOOK TO GET OUT OF DEBT! Dave nails it and provides a means to get out of debt FAST and take financial control of ones life. What is dissapointing is that Dave still believes in the Fed and Wallstreet. He bashes Gold, Silver, insurance and Foreign Investments when these investments have proven to be more safe and profitable than US Stocks in the last decade. The True financial problem is right at home in Wallstreet. The debt part and Mortgage part is Great! The rest I believe does not apply for a Post 2010 Era.

"Recommended if you are in deep financial trouble"
By Ralph (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) Oct 22, 2008
this book is really targeted at people with lots of debt and financial problems. Although there are some good tips for everyone, the main focus is on how to get out of debt.
