Publisher's Summary

Timothy Carrier, having a beer after work at his friend's tavern, enjoys drawing eccentric customers into amusing conversations. But the jittery man who sits next to him tonight has mistaken Tim for someone very different and passes to him a manila envelope full of cash. "Ten thousand now. You get the rest when she's gone."

The stranger walks out, leaving a photo of the pretty woman marked for death, and her address. But things are about to get worse. In minutes, another stranger sits next to Tim. This one is a cold-blooded killer who believes Tim is the man who has hired him.

Thinking fast, Tim says, "I've had a change of heart. You get ten thousand - for doing nothing. Call it a no-kill fee." He keeps the photo and gives the money to the hired killer. And when Tim secretly follows the man out of the tavern, he gets a further shock: the hired killer is a cop.

Suddenly, Tim Carrier, an ordinary guy, is at the center of a mystery of extraordinary proportions, the one man who can save an innocent life and stop a killer far more powerful than any cop...and as relentless as evil incarnate. But first Tim must discover within himself the capacity for selflessness, endurance, and courage that can turn even an ordinary man into a hero - inner resources that will transform his idea of who he is and what it takes to be The Good Guy.

"A great start and a terrible ending"
By Jaimie (Coweta, OK, USA) Jun 6, 2007
I was delighted with the first part of this book. The characters and action, while a lot like his other books, provided an enjoyable listen. The narrator was good, though not stellar, and kept my attention for the duration.

The entire book falls apart at the end, however. The explanations and the characters' secrets (when we finally get them without calls interrupting them), feel extremely contrived and politically motivated. And we don't even get an explanation for the killer, who is easily the most interesting character in the book.

All in all, the good points at the beginning of the book are overshadowed by an ending that seems rushed, poorly contrived, and doesn't live up to expectations prompted by the hints given in the story.

    "Disappointment"
By Connie (Rock Hill, SC, United States) Jun 6, 2007
I have listened to 3 and 1/2 hours of Part One and I am not impressed. This is certainly not the typical on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller that I typically love about Koontz' work. So far, I find the characters boring and lifeless and the plot weak. If it doesn't get better, I may have to pass on Part Two.

    "Dawn"
By Dawn (Deltona, FL, USA) Jun 14, 2007
I was concerned when I saw the negative feedbacks, which prompted my review. This was a delightful listen! So many books require us to pay too close attention to details--we find ourselves getting lost or not knowing key facts halfway thru the book. This is in typical Koontz fashion, an absolutely delightfully-told, well-structured story. Great characters, great story, great ending. I don't know what there could be to complain about!

    "Another Great Koontz"
By Ray (Jacksonville, TX, USA) Jun 11, 2007
The characters make the book, and Koontz has a knack for creating the most strange, interesting, off-center characters, and this book is no exception!

"Not Bad but not Dean's Best"
By Richard (Colorado Springs, CO, USA) Jun 8, 2007
I've been reading Dean's novels since 1968. This is not one of my favorites, even though it has some really good moments and Dean's normal attention to detail that shows his research into the background of his characters. The main villain is similar to the DROTH villain, but with enough uniqueness to make him stand out. The protagonist is typical of Dean and likens to those in The Good Husband, DROTH, and Life Expectancy.
The female lead was interested although some of her background seemed torn from another of Dean's books.
Overall I liked the book and found the ending justified the body.

    "Very Good"
By Steve (Eagan, MN, United States) Feb 14, 2009
I really liked this one. The story kept my attention, and the narrator was excellent. Koontz has his moments and this is one of them. My only negative comment was the ending and how it was wrapped up. Too much was built up for the main characters secret, which was a let down when it was disclosed. A definate air of preachiness and overly played patriotic presentation took away from an otherwise very well written story. Definately give this one a chance.

    "Great Villian"
By Sandra (Boise, ID, United States) Jan 13, 2009
This book is a great listen, the narrator does a lovely job of capturing the voice of each character.
The hero of the book is pleasent character and the villian is absolutly delicious, love to hate him, and hate to love him.

    "Disappointing"
By Connie (Shawnee, KS, United States) May 10, 2008
Being a big fan of Dean Kootnz, I was very disappointed in the dialogue of this book. It was too "cutesy" and was not up to Mr. Kootnz's degree of storytelling.

    "WOW"
By Ladonna (Palatka, FL, USA) Jun 10, 2007
This may not be typical "Koontz" but this book is wonderful. I had goosebumps at the end. Loved it. Will listen to this book again and again.

    "Generally good book"
By Denise (Oakdale, NY, USA) Jul 1, 2008
Generally good book with some slow patches. As with all Koontz books, the villian never disappoints and neither does the hero.
