The basis for the blockbuster motion picture directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Shutter Island by New York Times bestselling author Dennis Lehane is a gripping and atmospheric psychological thriller where nothing is quite what it seems. The New York Times calls Shutter Island, “Startlingly original.” The Washington Post raves, “Brilliantly conceived and executed.” A masterwork of suspense and surprise from the author of Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone, Shutter Island carries the reader into a nightmare world of madness, mind control, and CIA Cold War paranoia and is unlike anything you’ve ever read before.

Read the book before you see the movie!! Actually.... skip the movie! LOVED this book! I've read / listened to over 100+ books in the past 2 years and have never written a review. I just had to on this one. The narrator was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Every character had a distinct voice and in a few places he had to switch back and forth at lightening speed....and he did! Excellent job on his part. Hats off! The story was as good as the story teller.Something interesting happened quite often and I found myself trying to figure things out too...right along with the main character.
If twists and turns are what you like, get this book. Something different from soooo many others. I've been getting very bored with the same old plots and storylines and this was refreshing. It really was enjoyable and I'm sure you wont be disappointed.

WOW! A great find....finally!

I gave it 4 stars, taking one off for the overall darkness. However, it is a great psychological mystery that kept me wondering and guessing...and I'm still thinking about it!

Really Good Mystery and Narration

I was pleasantly surprised by actually liking this book. The story holds together well and the psychology seems well researched. This is a good example that a story doesn't have to be long to have engrossing characters and tell a chilling tale. I also saw the film and it stayed close to the book. I advise both because the acting and directing are excellent.

Surprisingly good

Really enjoyed this story once I got through the first few chapters. Took a while for the story to take shape, but once it did, I was totally engrossed. Saw the movie afterward and have to say the audio book was better :) Great narration, as well.

Slow to start but gets better

The story was great, as too, was the narrator, but the editing was downright terrible at times. The chapters did not match with the book, at times ending for Audible at the middle of a spot in the book and leading to a crammed insertion of the chapter title between sentences that felt out of place and would ruin the flow. Equally annoying was how the volume and sound of the narrator would change between chapters, as though some were with the use of a quality microphone and the others a cheap one. Good narrator, good story, bad finished product.
