Bill Bryson was born in the middle of the American century, 1951, in the middle of the United States, Des Moines, Iowa, in the middle of the largest generation in American history, the baby boomers. As one of the best and funniest writers alive, his is perfectly positioned to mine his memories of a totally all-American childhood for 24-carat memoir gold. Like millions of his generational peers, Bill Bryson grew up with a rich fantasy life as a superhero.

Publisher's Summary

Every time Bill Bryson walks out the door memorable travel literature threatens to break out. His previous excursion up, down, and over the Appalachian Trail resulted in the sublime best seller A Walk in the Woods. Now he has traveled around the world and all the way "Down Under" to Australia, the only island that is also a continent and the only continent that is also a country. Australia exists on a vast scale, a shockingly under-discovered country with the friendliest inhabitants, the hottest, driest weather, the most peculiar and lethal wildlife to be found on this planet, and more things that can kill you in extremely malicious ways than anywhere else: sharks, crocodiles, the ten most deadly poisonous snakes on the planet, fluffy yet toxic caterpillars, seashells that actually attack you, and the unbelievable box jellyfish. In a Sunburned Country is a delectably funny, fact-filled and adventurous performance by a writer who combines humor, wonder, and unflagging curiosity. Wherever Bryson goes he finds Australians who are cheerful, extroverted, and unfailingly obliging. They are the beaming products of a land with clean, safe cities, cold beer, and constant sunshine. Australia is an immense and fortunate land, and it has found in Bryson its perfect guide.

What the Critics Say

"Bryson's cheery Australian tale should entertain even the most listless driver. His strength lies in his ability to incorporate astounding facts about the country with nutty personal anecdotes." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Laugh out loud funny"
By Larry (El Paso, TX, USA) Jun 9, 2003
This is my first book by Bryson but it won't be my last. His wit and satire made this one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a long time. In addition to its humor, the book provides an excellent glimpse of Australia... its history, its people, its cities, and its unique and beautiful sights. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about Australia and have a good time to boot. (Memorable quote from the book: "Most people, when sleeping, look like they need a blanket. I look like I need medical attention.")

    "Fantastic introduction to Australia"
By Christina (Medina, OH, USA) Feb 3, 2004
I downloaded this because I am planning a trip 'down under' and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is beautifully written, amusing, and extremely informative. Bryson has done an immense amount of research on this country, and imparts it in a thought-provoking, insightful, and funny way. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in Australia or in travel writing in general. Only a few minor drawbacks keep this from five stars in my opinion: it has a confusing strucutre (I'm never sure which visit we're on) and gets a bit too long and repetitive toward the end.

    "Travel writing at its best"
By Terry (Kells, Co MeathIreland) Apr 8, 2003
Fans of Bill Bryson will know what to expect: sharp, scathing, hilariously funny tales from the master of travel writing. If anything, this book is even better than normal because the subject matter is less familiar - giving Bryson free rein to expound on the history, culture(?) and natural perils of Australia. He also narrates the book himself - something that is normally a Very Bad Thing. But he does an excellent job - better, perhaps, than anyone else would have done. All things considered, an excellent book.

    "In a Sunburned Country"
By Stephen (Hong KOngHong Kong) Mar 4, 2005
I have only one complaint about this book. If it's your first audio book then it's hard to see you finding anything better. He's witty and incisive bringing to life a country I've had the pleasure to visit on a few occasions. He draws word pictures which bring to life the people, the geography and even the social attitudes, particularly in his comments about the appalling Australian treatment of Aborigines. Even then he handles it with a wry humour and moves on in his own inimitable way.

    The man's a star!!

It would get 10 stars if they were avaialble!!

"Funny book, shame about the delivery."
By James (BournemouthUnited Kingdom) Jun 18, 2004
There are very few authors who can also perform their books as well as an actor could, and unfortunately Bill Bryson isn't one of them. However, even with his rather dull naration, some parts had me shaking with laughter. I can recommend this book, but with reservations.

"Intelligent, Witty and just a good listen"
By Curt (Palmdale, CA, USA) Feb 25, 2005
What makes his books for me is his dry wit and excellent delivery. I didn't know much about Australia and now I know a little more thanks to Bryson's book. His great descriptions of this country have made it one of my future destinations.

    "Could You do Better?"
By Daniel (Windsor, CA, USA) Jan 31, 2005
The idea of critiquing one of Bill Bryson's books without giving it as many stars as is allowed baffles me. My reasoning is that I personally have never succeeded in writing anything, let alone a book about a real life adventure, better than Mr. Bryson.

I suppose if you were someone like say, oh, Hemmingway, that you might get away with giving Bill a 4 out of 5 star rating, sighting lack of romance to the descriptions or some such. But then, none of us are Hemingway are we? We're accountants and departmental whosits and teachers and yogurt truck drivers.

So unless your name is known by every librarian in the country, just buy the book and allow yourself all 5 stars worth of enjoyment out of it. Take a stroll through Australia through the eyes of someone who can express the experience with fun and charm.

Delightful, and a perfect book for listening in short stretches as in city driving.

    "Interesting but not entertaining"
By Michael (Baltimore, MD, USA) Jun 24, 2004
Lots of people seem to love this book, but the feeling I am left with is that I just spent 11 hours watching Bryson sitting alone in a bar hoping someone will talk to him. And in this time, his verbal affectations have begun to irritate me. I never want to hear him say the word "shop" ever again. It sounds something like schoupt, but I don't think we have letters adequate to describe it. All that said, the story about the construction workers and the little girl is worth the price of the book.

"Plan your trip to Auz, don't plan on laughing"
By Matthew (St. Albans, N/A, United Kingdom) Aug 29, 2003
I read "Lost Continent" when it came out and laughed myself silly! Recently I had a long car trip to take, and thought I'd re-acquaint myself with the author, and was disappointed.

The book is factually packed with useful information if you are planning a trip to Australia and need some background knowledge, but it is very long in this audio format with any entertainment way too thin on the ground (a couple of "ha's" every 5-10 mins and one laugh-out loud joke in the first hour is disappointing).

That leaves this heartfelt and interesting description of Australia in limbo between a travel book that doesn't give hotel phone numbers, and topical, entertaining writing that falls way short of the authors previous work.

Now I have thought this through, I've given it 2 stars instead of 3!
