Critic reviews

“I read this book in a state of wonder, not just for the author’s gifts as a nuanced storyteller and sharp observer, but for those other remarkable gifts, of intelligence, sensitivity, wit, intuition, self-awareness, and élan that were bestowed on him when he came into the world—all of which he has freely shared with us so long and so beautifully; and finished reading in a state of deep gratitude for the gifts, and the gift, of Patrick Stewart.” —Michael Chabon

“Patrick’s early life is a Dickensian tale of domestic violence and misfortune, transformed by chance and some good folk into the actor internationally admired and loved. He writes as well as he acts, with insight, truth, and passion. Another Stewart Triumph!” —Sir Ian McKellen

“There is so much to say about Sir Patrick. He is an amazing actor, great to look at, really funny, and up for anything. He is a kind man…compassionate and sensitive….but, as you will find when you read the book, his greatest asset as a human being is the fact that he is so completely and unapologetically himself.” —Whoopi Goldberg

That Voice

I highly recommend you listen to this book. It is narrated by Sir Patrick Stewart himself. I enjoy Star Trek, but I found the non-Star Trek stories just as entertaining. His story about rising up from the rule part of England to international fame is fascinating. Stuart remains humble and honest. This is a great performance. I highly recommend it.

Speechless

The depth of his memory read with such a familiar voice is an adventure unimaginable.

I am blown away by the vivid sharpness of his recollections. Some stories I knew, others were incredible and even shocking.

Have a map of the UK handy when reading.

Amazing listen!

Magnificently read! Was so curious and intrigued that I found myself reading up and digging for photos to all the performers/actors he encountered throughout his career in British theatre and Hollywood!

Absolute best book I've read in decades...

The story of Patrick's life is absolutely amazing and what an honor it is to hear it from his own lips. His natural humility comes across with every word and just makes the listener love him more. In a world so filled with controversy and lies, Patrick's life story will take you to a place of honesty. It will take you to the home we used to know. He is not afraid to tell the truth.

He made it so!

It takes a fantastic and admirable level of vulnerability to tell as much truth as Patrick Stewart does in this book. Naturally, he talked about Shakespeare, Star Trek, X-Men, and even American Dad. He also shares the parts of himself that are difficult to imagine, because they are imperfect and often involve mistakes that would be easy to judge (except they are the same ones many of us have made very often). Once you pick this one up, you won’t be able to put it down. Make it so!

Thank You

Pat Stew, thank you for allowing us into your journey. I enjoyed hearing about all your adventures from your perspective. It was a pleasure. For the record, I preferred your vision of the final reunion scene.

Review: Simply enjoyable. I can sense a level of acceptance and contentment from Patrick that brought me a level of calm throughout the book. Seeing the man behind the scenes also provided depth to my understanding of how his on-screen characters were intended to be viewed and provided me the opportunity to go back and witness them as such.

Wonderful

Terrific detailed story and just enough honesty and humor. Hits on the parts we all want to hear and some surprises.
Of course the voice makes it all the better.

Wonderfully written and performed

I realized while listening to this book that I didn't know as much about Patrick Stewart as I thought I did. In fact, I learned that I may never have watched a single one of his shows or films. I saw him once on stage in London in the mid-late 2000s and I suppose that's where my love for him comes from.

His story isn't always happy - real life rarely is - but he tells it with such grace that it's hard not to root for him.

This is an excellent memoir and one I definitely recommend.
