Publisher's summary

There's only one thing sweeter than my cupcakes—his lips.

I'm just your run-of-the-mill earth witch, baking up some harmless hexes, that is until a necromancer starts messing with my town. With the dead looking for brains, suddenly I'm Mrs. Popular. Everyone wants my special charms, especially my pumpkin spice zombie-repelling cupcakes.

Everyone but Reiver, the sword-wielding stranger who saves me from an undead attack. The hunter is big, bad, and not my type. For some reason, I can't resist the mysterious drifter in the long leather coat. Must be a spell, which I'll break because I am not falling for him.

Despite his reservations—and mine—we team up to go after the evil infesting my hometown. I don't know about you, but I've got a problem with someone who thinks it's okay to kill people to create a zombie army.

Not on this baker's watch. Time to whip up a batch of awesome to save the world.

Contains mature themes.

Having fun

I enjoyed this short story. It had some fun quirky side characters. Light hearted. I also liked the narrator especially when she was doing Annie’s character. Going on to next book.

Not so much…

The story concept had promise… but the execution isn’t that great. Overall there isn’t much story. No real world building, no real character development, and WAY to much of the preaching. Every other sentence has something to do with save the earth. The narrator didn’t appeal to me either. Her voice is pleasant enough, but her inflection and tone are off putting. I finished the whole story, but it was not worth the money.

If only this was related to Deviant Future series

I got this at the last site wide sale because it was advertised as a series connected to the author’s Deviant Future series. As of today, the summary still wrongly suggests this connects. However, this has nothing whatsoever to do with the dystopian romance series. Too bad. That series gave good pulpy value (you can get them in three book collections and currently the first three are in Audible Plus).

This book failed on all levels for me. The narration sounds like Glinda the Good Witch with a cold.
The story is childish and cloying. It features a vegan earth-witch who spends as much time talking about ethically sourced foods as she does about calling upon her goddess. There are cute goblins. Head scratch. The romance is fade to black and utterly lacking in chemistry. And despite the cozy-level writing,
there are F bombs. It was a hodgepodge of head scratching plots, characters, and writing choices.
