Publisher's summary

Monsters with a taste for children are nothing new, but fairy tales never mentioned this nightmarish predator. Rue has her hands full tracking the creature hunting the streets of Charleston, but a call from home divides her attention—and her loyalties.

A stranger has come to Hollis Apothecary, asking questions that prickle the hairs on her nape, but she can't abandon the victims based only on a bad feeling. The pit in her stomach only grows when the stranger takes a hostage and makes his demands. He wants to talk to Rue, face to face. Or else. What he has to say will change her life, and her perception of her past, forever.

Contains mature themes.

#TeamRue for the win!

The crew is at it again. Together they’re going to kick butt and take names. Maybe not in that order.

I love Rue. Her bond with Colbie, Clay and Asa grows with each book. I will say, shew, the amount of trouble that follows this group is banana pants—and yet—it makes the story all the better.

When someone shows up and puts her people in danger, Rue will do what’s needed to keep them safe. If her claws come out, you better watch yourself.

I like the way things unfold. You think, “oh, I knew it as…nope. Dang, I didn’t see that coming”. Maybe that’s just me but I like when it’s not what I think it is. Bad guys, monsters, jerks… the story has it all and we get to see the team acting and reacting to what’s happening. They’re a well oiled machine to say the least.

4 Stars 🌟

I took a fairly long break (time wise and book wise) between the 3rd and 4th book of this series and unfortunately it took me a little bit of time to remember who was who and what was going on. I think (though I'm not completely sure) that the first three books were a story arc that was mostly completed, like the first trilogy and this 4th book brought us to the new story arc that has Rue now working back with the Black Hat organization - even if it is not something she is wanting to do. The Director knows exactly what buttons to push to back her into a corner.

One thing I DID remember was the fantastic characters of Colby, Clay and Asa. I love the world of characters that Ms. Edwards has created and the family that they are building. Who knew that a moth fae, a Gollum, a black witch and a couple of demon/fae's - not to mention two human girls - could create such a wonderful family. Colby and Clay are a hoot :)

I alternated between listening and reading this and the narrator - Stephanie Richardson - did a fine job. I enjoyed her portrayal of most characters (especially Colby) but really kind of had a hard time with Clay's voice. Oh well, I did enjoy it for the most part.

This book has the gang working their first case with the BH organization and there is an arrival at the Apothecary shop while Rue is out of town. Eventually we find out that the visitor is someone COMPLETELY unexpected and he brings information that totally changes Rue's world view...on EVERYTHING.

So - the next book is going to be interesting. Things are about to get pretty crazy...or should I say...crazier!
