About this listen

A New York Times bestseller! From Edgar Award-winning novelist, playwright, and story-songwriter Rupert Holmes comes a diabolical thriller with a killer concept: The McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts, “a fantasy academy laid out like a combination of Hogwarts, Downton Abbey, and a White Lotus-style resort” (Los Angeles Times) dedicated to the art of murder where students study how best to “delete” their most deserving victim.

Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate…and where one’s mandatory graduation thesis is getting away with the perfect murder of someone whose death will make the world a much better place to live.

Prepare for an education you’ll never forget. A “fiendishly funny” (Booklist) mix of witty wordplay, breathtaking twists and genuine intrigue, Murder Your Employer will gain you admission into a wholly original world, cocooned within the most entertaining book about well-intentioned would-be murderers you’ll ever read.

Mr. Holmes, what a page turner! AKA I only stopped listening when asleep or being forced to have conversation with others. Great characters, twists, and then MORE twists, highly satisfying. If you like “clever” writing (think Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series, or double entendres, play on words) you will like it, even though there are a couple of eye rolling groaners. Lol

Mr. Harris and Mr. Vance, I thought, did a great job. I had not heard books narrated by either of them before but I will look for their other narrations. Female characters represented well.

Fun, engaging, surprising, worth it!

This book was a unique surprise. I was expecting dark humor, which I received, but I didn't expect such a good plot and characters. I smiled throughout. The book was weirdly charming for all that the subject was about getting away with murder. All the characters were well-defined and believable. The ending was particularly good, but I shan't spoil it. Neil Patrick Harris and Simon Vance were perfect choices as the main character (Neil) and all other characters (Simon). If you are a mystery reader and are tired of the same stories told over and over, or if you too are annoyed with mystery stories with plot holes that make little sense, I would recommend this book. Although it's not quite a mystery, it's interesting to see the 'good' murderer in action. I will definitely read this book again.

Quite good

I enjoyed the story and loved listening to Neil Patrick Harris. I could visualize the campus and the students and it got really good as each student worked on their thesis

Fun stuff

This book is fun, clever and dark. It is, after all, about how to murder correctly. The students' murder plots are wildly intricate and the author gives us a chance to get to know the characters through their motives and modus operandi. Very good narration, too. I had a smile on my face the whole way through. I might be going to hell for that...

I thoroughly enjoyed this delicious book. The story is unique and frequently made me giggle. The performance, particularly that of Neil Patrick Harris, captures all the voices perfectly.

Extremely clever and entertaining!

What a refreshing and delightful approach to the genre! Plenty of intrigue woven with unparalleled quirkiness and humor. The narration was so fabulous, I’d be hard pressed to recommend reading a hard copy over listening to this Audible version.

Outstanding!

This was a really fun listen. My daughter would listen along whenever it played in the car and would always demand an update on any parts that she may have missed. There were times when I cheered the characters on and others when I gasped in shock. I would highly recommend.
