Publisher's summary

Even in the most horrifying places on earth, hope still lingers in the darkness, waiting for the opportunity to take flight.

When war was declared, Horace Greasley was just 20 years old. After seven weeks' training with the 2/5th Battalion, the Royal Leicestershire Regiment, Horace found himself facing the might of the German Army in a muddy field south of Cherbourg, in Northern France, with just 30 rounds in his ammunition pouch.

Horace's war didn't last long.... On May 25, 1940 he was taken prisoner, and so began the harrowing journey to a prisoner-of-war camp in Poland. Those who survived the grueling 10-week march to the camp were left broken and exhausted, all chance of escape seemingly extinguished.

But when Horace met Rosa, the daughter of one of his captors, his story changed; fate, it seemed, had thrown him a lifeline. Horace risked everything in order to steal out of the camp to see his love, bringing back supplies for his fellow prisoners. In doing so he offered hope to his comrades and defiance to one of the most brutal regimes in history.

Good listen

The story of what the author went through during the war is frightening. He has a good flow of ideas and information. This time period is such a devastating one and what people had to endure that it is hard to comprehend such cruelty. Thank God this author survived!

Great book

I wasn’t able to solve the reasoning behind the babies name but I assume it wasn’t his child. Overall irrelevant ending but the book was a great story of the horrors of war and daily life of a POW.

Outstanding story with great narration. A bit heavy on the sexual details.

A deeply emotional, heartbreaking and moving story, especially towards the end. The narration was great as well. My only complaint is the extremely detailed sexual experiences. At times it seemed like I was listening to a steamy romance novel instead of a survival story/war biography. That alone is the only reason I gave the overall review four stars.

Heartbreaking

One of the greatest WW2 stories I’ve ever read. The ending will absolutely break your heart and leave you wishing for more.

Different kind of story

After listening to the entire book, I'm one of those who think the story is fiction.

Incredible story of survival and history

I loved the timeline of event presented along side the story.
It’s unimaginable story of survival, love and heroism. Please note: I did feel that there was a lot of sexual content- just more than I expected from this type of book.

Speechless

At first skeptical, another war memoir. Once I started, I was completely overtaken with the story and couldn’t stop listening. Absolutely amazing journey of grit, determination, love and sacrifice. Congrats to the author and excellent narrator. Horace was truly a hero!
