Winner of the 2023 Audie Award for Best Male Narrator

A #1 New York Times Bestseller and New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice!

Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for that world or ours.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was ten, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it.

Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch and loses his heart to Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world.

Magnificent, terrifying, and “spellbinding…packed with glorious flights of imagination and characteristic tenderness about childhood, Fairy Tale is vintage King at his finest” (Esquire).

“Good, evil, a kingdom to save, monsters to slay—these are the stuff that page-turners are made from.”—Laura Miller, Slate

King has outdone himself

I haven't been on an adventure like this in a long time. This story easily just made my top 10 favorites list. Being a dog lover who enjoys fantasy books with a touch of horror, this book was right up my alley. King channeled a bit of Tolkien, Bradbury, George R.R. Martin, and a lot of his own magic to weave this tapestry he called Fairy Tale. I was hooked from beginning to end.
The narrator did an amazing job with the voices and I loved Kings part as well. This was thoroughly fantastic.

Great story telling!

I got this book yesterday and completed it the next day. The narrator was great! The story was Steven King at his best, telling the reader a well developed story. I highly recommend the book. It was a fairy tale, with that dark twist. Also the characters in the story I enjoyed & liked. I especially loved the dog Radar & how Charlie became his person.

Superb In Every Way

I believe I’ve read or listened to every King book and, without exception, they were all well written and easily held my attention. And also, without exception, I found that I waited days or weeks before I began the book, because I needed to be ‘ready’ for the kind of ride that King was going to take me on. I waited a week or so before starting this book and right away, I could tell this was different. It almost seemed like a ‘normal’ book, full of ‘normal’ characters, with barely an inkling of horror. Yet it was honest and compelling and I couldn’t stop listening. It wasn’t until we were well into the book that we began to delve into some of King’s usual genre, yet even then it was subdued, without losing its interest or edge. The main character was brought to life superbly by both King and the narrator, and when the book was finished, I was truly sorry to know I would not hear more from Charlie. Kudos to the narrator who gave a near perfect performance. I will seek out further books with his narration.

Perfect modern-day fairytale story.

It was exactly what you'd expect of a fairytale, but at the same time it wasn't in all the right ways. It was emotional, relatable, and a more "grown-up or realistic" take on the classic fairytales told to children.

Also, loved the narrator. This was the first audio book I've actually listened to and it exceeded my expectations.

Amazing

I hadn’t read/listened to Stephen King in quite a while. This book was stunning. It’s long, no doubt, but I was riveted throughout. The reader was excellent and made every character different. I’m sad this book is over!

Hey Dawgg - Spoilers

Mr.King really really likes dogs. I have been a first responder for 20+ years. The last half I have seen some very unhealthy relationships with pets. I believe 50% of dog owners believe their dogs can understand complex sentences/instructions/directions and explanations from their owners. A few weeks ago I was asked to stop doing CPR on someone’s spouse because it was upsetting the dog. They took quite some time to explain to the dog what was going on and was frustrated when dog didn’t seem to understand and follows his/her detailed instructions. After reading this book I firmly believe Mr.King is the type of dog owner I find very odd and don’t understand. Regardless of how deep and expressive a dogs eyes are they do not understand complex emotions or spend time contemplating them. Remember, their hobbies are sniffing other dogs, butts, and occasionally eating feces. I felt embarrassed for the protagonist as he tracked across the countryside, feeding a dog, while the populis was gaunt and starved. What a wasteful luxury a dog feed human food must seem to someone who is starving. This kid trades an all state football career to play hospice nurse to a dog. I understand doing it for a person. I know it’s a fantasy fiction book, but I just didn’t buy it. It was fun idea for a book but a adult needs to step in and set this kid straight. This review settles it I’m officially a curmudgeon now.
