Publisher's summary

David Crockett was an adventurer, a pioneer, and a media-savvy national celebrity. In his short-but-distinguished lifetime, this charismatic frontiersman won three terms as a US congressman and a presidential nomination. His 1834 memoir enjoyed frenzied sales and prompted the first-ever "official" book tour for its enormously popular author. Down-to-earth, heroic, and independent to a fault, the real Crockett became lost in his own hype, and he's been overshadowed by a larger-than-life, pop-culture character in a coonskin cap.

Now, American Legend debunks the tall tales to reveal the fascinating truth of Crockett's hardscrabble childhood, his near-death experiences, his unlikely rise to Congress, and the controversial last stand at the Alamo that mythologized him beyond recognition. In this beautifully written narrative, Crockett emerges as never before: a rugged individual, a true American original, and an enduring symbol of the Western frontier.

Very interesting

Very good abs exciting book. Got a little slow with details of his political story, but if that’s not your thing, with audible you can skip and pick up at any point.

Buddy Levy delivers again.

As a fan of Author Buddy Levy I was not disappointed by his telling of David Crockett’s life story. It’s is fascinating how life in America has changed since the time of Crockett and to me, equally fascinating how it hasn’t.

A honest take on an American Legend.

This book dives deep into the man who unwittingly but excitedly became a legend. I was happy to read about the insecurities and some lack of maturity in the American Legend. All people have their flaws and our folk hero's are no different.

However, with a positive attitude, drive and learned wisdom, David Crockett never stopped trying to better his life; inadvertently (and occassionally purposefully) building on his own legend.

I was glad to hear that, overall, David Crockett was a charismatic, humorous, generous, kind and all-around decent human being (especially for the time period).

Overall this book was a good look at an American Folklore Hero that is so shrouded in myth and legend that you can't even begin to believe anything you hear.

Also, the narrator isn't horrible, but could be better.

Very well done

Wonderfully written and narrated. I love how this covers Crockett’s early life and includes his own writings and quotes. I highly recommend this audio.

Narrator is awful

The guy reading this sounds like he is doing a terrible John Wayne impression. I couldn’t get past it.
