Publisher's summary

The first novel in the Forerunner Saga trilogy by science-fiction legend Greg Bear - set in the Halo universe and based on the New York Times best-selling video game series!

One hundred thousand years ago, the galaxy was populated by a great variety of beings. But one species - eons beyond all others in both technology and knowledge - achieved dominance.

They ruled in peace but met opposition with quick and brutal effectiveness. They were the Forerunners - the keepers of the Mantle of Responsibility, the next stage of life in the Universe’s Living Time.

And then they vanished.

This is their story.

a needed look at the backstory of the forerunners

if you've ever wondered about the forerunners, the flood, the precursors, or mendicant bias, than this is what you need to listen to.

Phenomenal insight into the Forerunners

Book was phenomenal and gave great lore. You feel cheated by the games' lack thereof.

One of the best Halo books

The Forerunner novels are basically Halo's Dune. They and Halo 4 were such a bright start to the reclaimer era. Sadly, 343 whiffed it with Halo 5, but at least this trilogy is still good

The story

The story was difficult to follow for me. I didn't know what was going on for over half the book. Still enjoyed it though.

Cryptum's review

At first, I thought this was the next book in the canonical order of Halo books. I believe I was mistaken. For me, I struggled to get a hold of the story and put this audio book down for a time. Perhaps I'll be more interested in the second book.

Greg Bear delivers the goods

I was worried that the epic power that Bear brings into imaginations could be lost when writing for a franchise. It was not. Fantastic, mentally stimulating, and a great addition to the Halo universe.

Overall fantastic!

This has added so much to Halo lore. Finally lifting the cloak around Forerunners.

The narration is one of the best I’ve ever heard.
