Publisher's summary

Condemned by King Stephen. Loved by King Henry. Honoured by King Richard. Betrayed by King John. For William Marshall, the greatest knight of the realm, serving royalty is an unpredictable business.

Having survived the threat of beheading from Stephen as a child, Marshall rises from nothing to a place in court serving King Henry II. Accused of acting on his love for the beautiful Queen Margaret, William is saved by his trust and loyalty to the king. But the battle for the throne is relentless, and when Henry's own son John rises against him, William must decide if he can remain loyal to the crown....

A Pride of Kings, the first in the Plantagenet series, is an epic chronicle of love, heroism, loyalty, and betrayal in one of the most fascinating periods of English history.

More like Cliff Notes than a story

I’m a fan of William Marshall. His story is like no other. I long for someone to make a TV series like Game of Thrones about his life. He is truly a hero. So, having said that I found this book to be barren of personality And many of the details that make his life so interesting. I recommend it for class notes but to learn that story of the Marshall I recommend Sharron Kay Penman’s trilogy.
Until recently there was almost nothing about William Marshall folks are catching on so there are more and more as time goes on. None are as captivating, in my opinion as Penman’s because she covers not just Marshall personally but his interactions with the entire crazy royal family at that time.
The reader, Antony Ferguson is adequate but brings no life to the performance. I think he’d be great for Cliff Notes, manuals or text books and I don’t see that as demeaning. Different skill sets are equally valuable. I do not recommend him to read adventurous or emotional stories.

Historical Novel

A very interesting glimpse into history. it is about a man who served four English kings over his lifetime. William Marshal was an actual man who rose from being a political hostage at 6, disclaimed by his father, no land or title to a prominent figure at court. He was heralded as one of the greatest fighters in Europe. This is a glimpse not only into his life but politics, personalities, and lifestyles of that time; it's like taking a walk in the past
