Rejected by a sister who has allowed her new status as wife to Mr. Bingley to make her proud, Elizabeth Bennet goes to her uncle's estate in Derbyshire, ostensibly to assist her cousin in her introduction to society. In reality, Elizabeth feels there is nothing left for her in the neighborhood of her birth.

Her uncle's estate is small, and Elizabeth must work while there, and though she finds her tasks easy to bear. She quickly becomes close to her young cousin and uncle, though her aunt is a hard, demanding woman, who seems to hold a grudge against Elizabeth. But she also meets many friends, including the daughter of an earl, and the handsome friend of her sister Jane's new husband, a Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.

As Elizabeth is slowly pulled from her melancholy, new vistas open up to her, and she realizes that she can still have everything she has ever wished to have. But the jealousy of a woman who is no friend of her courtship with a wealthy man threatens her newfound happiness, and the coming of a sister who rejected her has the potential to once again disrupt Elizabeth's life and destroy her future.

Very fun read, and a pleasant narrator! I enjoyed the premise and the redemption arc for some of the side characters.

I really enjoyed this retelling of Pride and Prejudice. It has a very different twist on some of the caricature and the roles they normally play. This was a very clean read. It’s a longer listen, but I never felt like it was too long. I enjoyed coming across the author. I will definitely be checking out more of his books!

This was a great story line and very well written and narrated. I love all of Jann Rowland’s books. Can’t wait to read another.

Great variation on P &P

I just enjoyed a summer in Derbyshire without the high cost of travel or packing the wrong shoes (mud does rear it’s messy head). Jann Rowland is one of those authors who handles the “friends-to-lovers” trope very well. “In the Wilds of Derbyshire” presents ODC with a misunderstanding-free courtship. There are plenty of misunderstandings for them to untangle BUT not in their relationship. This story doesn’t have any angst or high drama. Not every story must have the heroine tied to the railroad tracks! Being forced out of a carriage and left on an isolated road is drama enough. (Don’t tell anyone but, when I run the audio at a speed of 1.5, I almost forget that Mary Sarah is narrating… almost.)

Who knew that “In the Wilds…” would be added to my favorites list?

This is one of the many pride and prejudice vagaries or versions you can find on audible. I find myself addicted to these books as pride and prejudice is not only a classic but one of my very favorite Jane Austen books.

This one lead you to understand the background of her family far better than any of the other versions I’ve read. I truly enjoyed this one it’s one of the better versions. It’s quite a link the book and it gives good value for a credit.

Loved the voice of the reader. Love all the different accents she tries to do. This was a different way to Darcy and Elizabeth way to live. Caroline is really mean. Highly recommended

I was already quite taken with this book, I think it one of Jann Rowland's best, but now it has become an even bigger favorite due to the wonderful skills and style of narrator Mary Sarah!! Thank you so much!

I really liked this P&P variation. The story moves along a great pace. The characters are interesting as well as keeping to Austen’s descriptions. Great hea and interaction between Darcy and Elizabeth. Excellent choice for Escape

Excellent story and narration

I love this story, it hit all my marks when it comes to a Darcy and Elizabeth rendition. The author let us see what happens when Darcy and Elizabeth are able to meet and court naturally, without all the interference from the original. They still have challenges to overcome so the story doesn’t feel pointless or trite. I loved the performance as well. I’m a big fan and I hope more stories from this author come to Audible.
