Publisher's summary

From Taylor Caldwell, the world-famous novel about the triumphant story of St. Luke, man of science and Gospel writer

Lucanus grew up in the household of his stepfather, the Roman governor of Antioch. After studying medicine in Alexandria, he became one of the greatest physicians of the ancient world and traveled far and wide through the Mediterranean region healing the sick. As time went on, he learned of the life and death of Christ and saw in him the God he was seeking. To find out all he could about the life and teachings of Jesus, whom he never saw, Lucanus visited all the places where Jesus had been, questioning everyone - including his mother, Mary - who had known him or heard him preach. At last, when he had gathered all information possible, he wrote down what we now know as the Gospel according to St. Luke.

Taylor Caldwell's own travels through the Holy Land and years of meticulous research made Dear and Glorious Physician a fully developed portrait of a complex and brilliant man and a colorful re-creation of ancient Roman life. Here is a story to warm, to inspire, to call forth renewal of faith and love lying deep in each listener's heart.

Excellent fiction

I read this book many years ago and was thrilled to read it again. It is a fictional accounting of the physician, Luke, from the bible. It is VERY loosely based on the bible and the author has a wonderful imagination of how she pictures his story, but regardless of the biblical inaccuracies and bold fiction, it is historically a very interesting tale and held me captive for most of it. There are a few flowery parts where I did not focus, but it captured me almost immediately when they were over. I recommend it to anyone looking for an excellent read!

Excellent Listen

Beautiful story, beautifully told. I actually read this book years ago and loved it then, but listening to it brought it to life. References to biblical events were tastefully done. I truly enjoyed this book.

A story for all ages

I've read this book as a teen, a young adult, and now via audio as I transition to old age. It holds up well, with different insights emerging at each reading.

Caldwell’s account of the life of Luke, beloved writer of The Gospel of Luke and part of Acts of the Apostles is inspired and inspiring. It is so well done and believable that God must surely be pleased!

Rich novel filled with Insights from St Luke story

Engaging novel with insightful St. Luke's back story that i heard for the 1st time, despite being a practicing catholic for all my life. Sheds light on how the Phofecy of the Messiah was long before Babylon times and how it misteriosly was also present in Egypt, including the cross sign in the pyramids. Great to see his physician vocation initiated as a rebellion against death, and how with time he developed the understanding of physical and spiritual health, and inspiring life , filled with traps of power and Glory in Rome didn't keep him from the search and postumary meeting with the Truth, and document the life of the Messiah, that bridged this life to Paradise.

Beautiful imagery of the time!

This dramatisation of the life of St Luke truly brought the world and times of Jesus to life. Even if not historically correct perhaps, it creates images that make the events of 2000 odd years ago shine in brilliance.

Pronunciation?

Unfortunately, the narrator, all through this book, pronounces "Messiah" as "messy-ass." This is beyond idiocy and intensely grating to my ears. One can only give thanks that he never has to announce "Cheeses Heights."
