A #1 New York Times bestseller!

“A rip-roaring adventure merged with satisfying romance.” —Entertainment Weekly
“[A] swashbuckling launch to the Eldest Curses series.” —Publishers Weekly

From #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestseller Cassandra Clare and award-winner Wesley Chu comes the first book in a new series full of “swoon-worthy romance [and] abundant action” (Publishers Weekly). The Red Scrolls of Magic is a Shadowhunters novel.

All Magnus Bane wanted was a vacation—a lavish trip across Europe with Alec Lightwood, the Shadowhunter who against all odds is finally his boyfriend. But as soon as the pair settles in Paris, an old friend arrives with news about a demon-worshipping cult called the Crimson Hand that is bent on causing chaos around the world. A cult that was apparently founded by Magnus himself. Years ago. As a joke.

Now Magnus and Alec must race across Europe to track down the Crimson Hand before the cult can cause any more damage. Demons are now dogging their every step, and it is becoming harder to tell friend from foe. As their quest for answers becomes increasingly dire, Magnus and Alec will have to trust each other more than ever—even if it means revealing the secrets they’ve both been keeping.

Critic reviews

"In the first audiobook in The Eldest Curses trilogy (part of The Shadowhunter Chronicles), B.D. Wong, known for his work in Disney films, television, and theater, gives voice to warlock Magnus Bane and his boyfriend, Alec Lightwood. While touring Europe after the Mortal War, they discover a cult that is determined to cause chaos. Wong engages with the gripping tale's accelerating intrigue as Magnus and Alec race across the continent to stop the cult. Wong puts listeners directly in the center of events as the heroes cut it close all the way to the end.

🤩 It’s wonderful to see the story of Magnus and Alec developed into a series! Their characters are fascinating and their relationship even more so. I am always so happy to see a variety of issues and topics addressed in Cassandra Clare’s stories and this one does not disappoint. Past, present, future will all come into question as you read this and entertain you till the end.

So happy to see this story progress!

The Red Scrolls of Magic is magical, romantic, and amazing. It is filled with romance, magic, adventure, danger, mystery and secrets and pasts revealed. I loved reading about my favorite Shadowhunters series couple. Now this book is for Malec fans and is heavy on their romance, the beginnings and struggle of their relationship during the Mortal Instruments series. I love these two and love that we get to know a little more about Magnus’ past and find out what happened that was mentioned during City of Fallen Angels. I love BD Wong, he's a great actor and wasn't bad narrator either.

I enjoyed it

So I know I overlooked some flaws because of it. I love the setting and the romance between the two. It's cute seeing the start of their romantic journey.

The storyline was fine, but I just couldn’t connect with the narrator’s voice for Alex.

Good story, but…

It's a great story. However it desperately needs a new narrator. You can never be sure if it Alex or Magus speaking they sound the same. they both sou d very bland. Some of the other characters are sound nonsense. I had to stop and backtrack several times to try and understand what he was saying.

This book desperately needs a new narrator.

the narrator does good voices for the male characters. however, most of the female characters, he sounds like he's doing the voice of a flamboyant male rather than a female. and when he voices East Asian characters, he tends to overdo it. It sounds a little bit racist, though not intentionally I am sure.

story fun, and performance mostly good, but...
