Publisher's summary

Renowned Israeli historian Ilan Pappe's groundbreaking book revisits the formation of the State of Israel. Between 1947 and 1949, over 400 Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed, civilians were massacred, and around a million men, women, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint.

Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it could only have been called "ethnic cleansing." Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord in the course of this war, Ilan Pappe offers impressive archival evidence to demonstrate that, from its very inception, a central plank in Israel's founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. This is an indispensable book for anyone interested in the current crisis in the Middle East.

Important

It’s so much more important than anything to bring all the people together to put a stop to genocide around the world.

Hard Listen

This was a hard listen, but I’m glad I did. I’m ashamed of what I did not know prior to reading. 4 stars on the performance because I just had a hard time tracking with his voice, but I did appreciate the pronunciation being (seemingly) accurate.

Wonderful, easy to follow and detailed. An absolute must read! I had not read any prior work on the subject, but now feel I have a good understanding.

Interesting book, trusted source

It is a historical book so for some may be boring but it shows those elements of the history which are not very popular and widely known. The lector was struggling a lot with original names what was natural but also little bit irritating sometimes

Important reading

The book is very informative and well documented. The reader put some effort to pronounce correctly Jewish names, but dedicated no attention whatsoever on the pronunciation of Palestinian names which appears quite disrespectful.

Incredibly powerful and well argued

This book changed my perspective on the world. A very thorough, clear account of the Nakba and its ongoing tragedy.

A necessarily crucial perspective and recollection

I loved having an opportunity to recount the history of Palestine starting at a time where their history (and everything else) had begun a non-consensual process of elimination. The history of indigenous people, ALL indigenous people will always be relevant information for the collective evolution of human kind, if we are to retain a semblance of our humanity

Critical read

I’ve had this book sitting on my shelf for several years (many more years in my to buy queue). It was finally free on Audible, so I gave it a listen and am so glad I finally read it.

I’ve studied the history of the founding of Israel and the Nakba for almost 20 years. While the main events in this book were not new, the details brought into stark relief the barbarity and monstrousness of the Zionist project and the long genocide of the Palestinian people. The time is now to learn about the history that is so easily brushed away by colonial imperialistic powers.

Ilan Pappe does an amazing job of illuminating the atrocities and war crimes of Israel, with a deep understanding of the historical and generational trauma of Ashkenazi Jews and the enduring trauma of Palestinians removed from their homes, lands, and communities and the horrors they have witnessed and survived. Of course not all survived and those who are left are currently being genocided as the world watches in horror with no real power to bring this barbarity to an end.

Ilan pappe is a great historian and writer. He gives a lot of information that others have not written about in full.
