Publisher's summary

Victor is the ultimate predator. He surfaces to kill, then disappears into thin air. But he's a disposable commodity for the powerful people he works for - both the good guys and the bad. And no one has his back. Especially now that doing black bag jobs for the CIA has put a target on his head....

Antonio Alvarez, a high-ranking US intelligence official, is determined to clean house and find the legendary killer who slipped away from him during an operation in Paris. There's only one person Victor can turn to for help: a lethal female assassin whose life he once saved. And now Victor wants her to return the favor - by killing him....

Victor - my favorite bad boy assassin!

Victor - he's the best of the bad boys.
Raven is a woman who is almost as bad.
So, this book picks up where the last book left off. For anyone who doesn't remember or you've never listened to the last book, Victor had been working with someone. In the end he realized she was going to kill him and he poisoned her instead. She convinced him that she was worth saving and he tells her that if she is very fast and gets to a hospital ASAP she can be saved.
This book picks up with someone trying to kill Victor and someone trying to kill Raven while she is weak and still in the hospital.
Anyway, both Victor and Raven are very analytical assassins who need favors from each other. The circumstances are complex and the stakes are their lives. Can you guess who will be hmmmm... Victor-ious?
Although each of the Victor books can be read as a stand alone, I would recommend reading them in order because of the progression of this character.
Rob Shapiro is as always an OUTSTANDING narrator. I sincerely hope he and Victor continue to be a team.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!!!!

Victor the Assassin never disappoints!

The Victor the Assassin series has an antihero rather than a hero as protagonist. The Final Hour is book 7 in this very popular espionage series. In Victor British author Tom Wood has developed a unique protagonist who treats killing for money as just as job. US and UK intelligence agencies hire him to kill their targets as they hire other assassins to kill him.

In The First Hour Victor is exhausted by the need to always be vigilant and would like to either retire of at the least get some time to rest. His idea is to stage his own death with the help of a female assassin.

For action and intense, sustained suspense the Victor series is as good as any of the novels of the espionage thriller genre. Fans of the genre are sure to enjoy the novels as the books also create ethical dilemmas for the reader or listener. I've often wondered why a British author like Wood would select an American like Rob Shapiro to narrates his novels. I suspect he expects the US to be the major market for his audio books. In any case Shapiro does a great job.

Cabernet and Almonds ...

This audiobook combines a fast-paced, very well-written tale of murder and suspense with one of the best narrators in the business. I had never before heard of Tom Wood or Rob Shapiro; I just took a chance because I needed to quickly select an audiobook for a trip. Wow, what a pair: Woods and Shapiro! Like a good cabernet and dark-chocolate almonds, I'm going in for seconds on these two!

Come down to earth people with your 5 star reviews

It was better than the last book - But that's not a very big reach..

The drama between Victor and Raven is a little much to listen to. Also - I hope the fight scenes between a Middleweight bad-A male assassin and a fly weight female assassin are done..

Anyway - I liked the first 3 books overall in this series - But I haven't been a big fan since...

I'm losing enthusiasm for this series

Starting with the last one, I just don't like anyone in this series anymore.
Victor is becoming less and less sympathetic, very hard to root for.

I don't like Alvarez, either. Although I appreciate his pursuit of justice, I have less patience for his arrogance, insistence on seeing the world in black and white, and barging through life with the unerring conviction that he is in the right. He never doubts himself, never listens to anyone else. Completely impermeable to other opinions, facts, or alternative explanations. (which is interesting, because his crusade is based on vengeance for 2 people Victor didn't even kill) He doesn't care who he uses in pursuit of what he wants.
(these are not, in my opinion, virtues.)
I just hate having to listen to him blather and preach on and on and on and on.

So I listen to this character that grates on every nerve when he opens his mouth doggedly pursue a protagonist that I'm barely rooting for.

And JUST when I think Victor's going to finally get a little human - a little sympathetic… NOPE.
The book is well written as always, but it's getting hard to stay interested in (or tolerate).
Victor deserves to have someone treat--or deal with-- him exactly how he does to others.
So am I listening to hear him get his just desserts? No thanks.

Better than The Darkest Day, but not the best

This is book 7, picking up where book 5 left off--Victor left rival Raven dying of some unknown poison. As he goes off to work in book 6, she is recuperating in the hospital. This book is half about her. And someone is out to get them both. And she, like any good Bond girl falls in love with him, but Victor is a sociopath and cannot love anyone. The only reason we keep coming back, is that he does have some principles, some values. If not for those, he would be utterly despicable.

The story is, nevertheless, exciting and engaging, with Rob Shapiro doing his usual fantastic job of providing voices.

Fantastic!

YES! I have always been a fan, and this book does not disappoint. Great writing, great story, it flows well, and doesn't leave you wanting anything but more from the author.

Not the best in the series...

This was definitely my least liked book in the series. Pretty bland. The story felt thrown together. Hopefully it sets us up to an incredible book 8.

Really Fun

Among the best in the series but it may need the background of the others
