Publisher's summary

As the climate veers toward catastrophe, the innumerable losses cascading through the biosphere make vividly evident the need for a metamorphosis in our relation to the living land. For too long we've inured ourselves to the wild intelligence of our muscled flesh, taking our primary truths from technologies that hold the living world at a distance. This audiobook subverts that distance, drawing listeners ever deeper into their animal senses in order to explore, from within, the elemental kinship between the body and the breathing Earth.

The shapeshifting of ravens, the erotic nature of gravity, the eloquence of thunder, the pleasures of being edible: all have their place in Abram's investigation. He shows that from the awakened perspective of the human animal, awareness (or mind) is not an exclusive possession of our species but a lucid quality of the biosphere itself - a quality in which we, along with the oaks and the spiders, steadily participate.

With the audacity of its vision and the luminosity of its prose, Becoming Animal sets a new benchmark for the human appraisal of our place in the whole.

Amazing Must Read

I read his 1st book years ago and thought it a very fine read but this one far surpasses even that. I think it's an important book for our time, and has critical role to play in our current navigations of proper direction for the world.

a life changer

I put this book among the pantheon of soul excavating and deeply grounding books that have helped me expand my understanding of the world and my relationship to it. I will be recommending this book to all of my friends looking to do a bit of soul work.

Like the authors listed below, David Abram is an amazing narrator of his own work. His wisdom and inner peace come through in his voice. Yet, his passion for these profound and consequential perspectives makes his reading aloud inspiring and motivating.

If you like this book I would suggest Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, The Unlikely Peace at Cuchumaquic by Martin Prechtel, Tea Medicine by Wu De (Aaron Fisher), and anything by Clarissa Pinkola Estés.

Prepare to be permanently transformed...

I'll never walk through a forest the same way ever again. Abram's use of the English language is a treasure to humanity and the place we call home. His gift serves to pull us into direct, felt experience with the many-forms of sentience and their unique communication styles, reminding us of our inherent belonging-ness and interconnection with the living earth-our own flesh! This art form is a tool for transforming, re-membering, and re-storying our place in the depths of our larger ecologically informed flesh. You'll never look at the living landscape the same, and you'll probably be forever transfixed by the simple profundity of your own breath.

Becoming animal a full sensuous experience

A beautiful astounding account of Abram vision as a philosopher of the earth. I’ve heard this audiobook after his The Spell of the Sensuous and it has served me to delve deeper into a magical voyage towards the more than juman world. Abram is a fabulator who is able to transport the listener to an ecstatic trance.

Mind-Bending Journey Into Earth

Beautifully and powerful love story to our planet, and ourselves. I am forever altered by the stories, wisdom, insights that Abram shared in this book. Im inspired, and my mind had truly been bent into a more expansive perspective of the world we each inhabit. This is one of those I'll be buying the print version of and reading again, slowly and carefully. There's too much in here to put into the mind just once. Abrams words bear being consumed repeatedly so they can sink into our thick skulls.

Press your forehead into the bark of centuries-old trees

This vivid text is enlivened by the author’s reading. Written history versus oral history is in fact one of the main topics covered, so it is appropriate to experience it this way.
