Publisher's summary

A high-stakes drama set against the harsh beauty of the Maine wilderness, charting the journey of four friends as they fight to survive the aftermath of a white water rafting accident, The River at Night is a nonstop and unforgettable thriller by a stunning new voice in fiction.

Winifred Allen needs a vacation.

Stifled by a soul-crushing job, devastated by the death of her beloved brother, and lonely after the end of a 15-year marriage, Wini is feeling vulnerable. So when her three best friends insist on a high-octane getaway for their annual girls' trip, she signs on, despite her misgivings.

What starts out as an invigorating hiking and rafting excursion in the remote Allagash Wilderness soon becomes an all-too-real nightmare: A freak accident leaves the women stranded, separating them from their raft and everything they need to survive. When night descends, a fire on the mountainside lures them to a ramshackle camp that appears to be their lifeline. But as Wini and her friends grasp the true intent of their supposed saviors, long buried secrets emerge and lifelong allegiances are put to the test. To survive, Wini must reach beyond the world she knows to harness an inner strength she never knew she possessed.

With intimately observed characters, visceral prose, and pacing as ruthless as the river itself, The River at Night is a dark exploration of creatures - both friend and foe - that you won't soon forget.

This is not a thriller.

I'm about 5 hours in and still waiting for something, anything to happen. Four friends who don't seem to really like each other and a protagonist who is afraid of her own shadow go white river rafting far from civilization? If these women where real people they would not go camping and rafting. Maybe they would head to a yoga retreat but rafting in Maine? Please. They all get pissy when one of them hooks up with their guide the first night and act like the entire trip is a catastrophe because of it...even though they've supposedly been friend for years. Did I mention the hours of listening to nothing happen? Every sentence seems to needs multiple adjectives and descriptions of the characters hair. I've heard about each of the woman's hair more then once and even a dead dogs hair has made its way into the story. I hate these woman and can't imagine any of them being fun to be around much less taking a yearly vacation together. I keep waiting for the "thriller" to start but instead just get annoyed at the characters. So far raccoons are the most danger to make an appearance. Raccoons and bitchy women. Fun times.

Riveting!

I just couldn't stop listening to this book! I often listen when I go to bed, and set the sleep timer. With this book, I had to keep restarting it.... I'm not sure I slept at all, at least not until after the last chapter was read!

Not a good trip

The characters in this story are insufferable, so it made it difficult to care what happened to any of them. For a story that sounds like it is intended to be a thriller, this was really dull.

Great storytelling meets a great performance

After a couple of chapters I was completely hooked, taken on a wild ride of friendship and adventure. I loved the way nature in this book seemed to be it's own character, with its own mercurial personality. But the true star of the narrative was the sharp edged plot, the deep female friendships, the honesty and integrity of the dialogue. A must listen.

Probably a good story but the extremely foul language was too offensive

Too many F words. It seemed like a great story but the f words were painful to listen to. Totally unnecessary for the story. Women swearing constantly for no reason. Too bad.

An adventure gone very wrong!

This is a story of four women who take off on a river trip adventure to spend time together and get away from it all. All four women have baggage, but Wini seems the most timid and fearful of the bunch. When things go wrong, will she be able to step up and do what must be done? This is a great adventure/survival story set in the wilderness beside a raging river. It is a page turner most of the way, and I will definitely be looking for more novels by this new writer. If I have a criticism, I would say that the "bad people" did not seem scary enough, certainly not as scary as Mother Nature.

The Worst Book on Audible

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who enjoys books about women in peril.

Has The River at Night turned you off from other books in this genre?

Yes.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She was whiny & her accent for Simone was godawful. It was ridiculous & distracting.

What character would you cut from The River at Night?

All of them.

Any additional comments?

I don't know what was worst - the bad writing, the clunky dialogue or the pointless plot. In an age of feminism, I am amazed that books about weak women making one stupid decision after another are bestsellers. Definitely the worst book I've listened to in quite a while.
