Looking for an escape from childhood abuse, Reymundo Sanchez turned away from school and baseball to drugs, alcohol, and then sex and was left to fend for himself before age 14. The Latin Kings, one of the largest and most notorious street gangs in America, became his refuge and his world, but its violence cost him friends, freedom, self-respect, and nearly his life. This is a raw and powerful odyssey through the ranks of the new Mafia, where the only people more dangerous than rival gangs are members of your own gang, who in one breath will say they'll die for you and in the next will order your assassination.

Contains mature themes.

As already stated in other reviews the content is interesting but the narration is subpar. Why not get a fluent, native Spanish bilingual to read this? I didn't think it would distract or bother me as much but honestly, it would have. ade listening to this better.

Good content, cringy narration

As a Chicago resident who grew up in the hood it’s a very elaborate tale of what gang life is truly like.

Amazing tale

You can’t fake language. Poor decision in choosing this narrator. Not his fault but a native Spanish speaker should have been asked to narrate.

Great story but….

Loved this book so much!
The story is insane from begining to end you won't want to put it down

Great story telling by the author although the narrator does him no justice. The book is read by Rudy Sanda and his attempts to speak Spanish are as bad as his cringe-worthy Latino gangster accents he reads throughout the book. Every time he did an accent or says “Amor de Rey” would literally annoy me. He even gave an ER Doctor a cholo accent. Narrator reads gang shootouts and killings like he’s reading some kid a bedtime story. Other than the narrator, it’s a good read. Hopefully the next book has a better narrator.

The narrator is awful.

this book seemed very authentic.a very close look in a gang members life and bad child hood.a roller coaster of emotions. I highly recommend this book.

A very well written and introspective look into gang life in 1980s Chicago. This book is eye opening, tragic and well worth reading.

Heartbreaking, yet excellent

This book is one of the most painful stories I have ever read in my life. I have never read anything so horrific and so influential at the same time. The author is very brave to publicly announce the horrors he has seen in his life and how his actions influenced the pain he caused others. I will not forget the beginning of the book saying how the author wants to save the life of at least one child from the dangers of gangs and their influence, yet...the crimes described in the book (committed when the author was also a child) are unbearable for most adults to process-not to mention wanting to save children from that lifestyle.
I wish I could personally thank the author for not sugar coating anything. This is the real brutal reality for many individuals involved in this type of violence.

The most painful memoir I have ever read in my life. This book is a work of art, but it is not for the faint hearted.
